Someone said that Samsung won't play DVD's in XBMC. I don't know if that's true but DVD's work great on the Phillips w/XBMC.

I just bought the new extreme green xbox v.1.4 and the new philips drive and it seems to work perfectly, it reads all dvd-r and dvd-rw movies but my question is will the disc reading reliablility change if it is modded and once i run a backup of my games?

No modding will have no effect on how well the DVD drive works.

Ok, fair enough.  I just meant adding a mod chip when I said modding. rolleyes.gif

manage to get hold of 5 xbox today and all had phillips drive,  only 3 needs tweaking, out of the 3, only 1 didnt work no matter what i try sad.gif

...and that's why you've got to be careful when doing a pot tweak! Too far either way and you can seriously bugger up your drive, permanently.

I haven't yet opened my Xbox (it's still under warranty). I've softmodded it. I was wondering if there was any way of telling if I have a Philips or Samsung drive. For some reason, the tray is exactly like the Samsung, with the two holes on either side, but the drive exhibits the same problems as the Philips: can't read any DVD+R, can read DVD-R, but sometimes runs into problems and starts seeking continuously (quite a racket too: rrrrrrr... clack!), can read CD-R.

Softmod invalidates your warranty too, I believe tongue.gif

Moreso, considering your chip no longer has an MS BIOS on it, at all.

I have just received an NEC 2500A 8X DVD-/+RW. I burned a Memorex 8x DVD-R at 4X and the disc works flawlessly with the new Phillips drive manufactured 01-04. I also have a Samsung 52X CDRW 16XDVD combo, in which I burned 600M of small files at 52X using Verbatim 52X silver back. It works flawlessly too. I am also having great luck with Ritek and Imation still.

EDIT: Burned using Nero 6.3.0.2

Uh, Samsungs don't read DVD+R usually right?  unsure.gif

Anyone know what drive is likely to be in my crystal? It was made Feb 04 I think and from the pics of the drive trays it looks like a Phillips. Reckon so?

It's at home and I'm at work so I can't open it and look, however I'm away to order some blanks DVDs and need an idea of what type to get. Any suggestions?

Cheers

Sweet. That was a modified version of the pic I was looking at before.

The text below pretty much confirms I have the new Phillips.

Now to find what blanks I can use. What fun!

Thanks

Like many of u I also have problems with the new phillips drive.
I live in holland and the new drive always comes with a crystal xbox.

I modded about 5 crystals and 3 of them gave me problems reading certain games that plays fine on other drives.

So this is what I did to solve it for now, I took one of the new drives that plays most of the games fine, and measured the resistance.
LP=702
RP=1064

I tried to give another drive the same measurements, LP was a bitch, because when i tried to set it to 702 each little tweak it went from 750 to 650. The closest i could get was about 658.
I forgot to note down the original settings but new settings are:
LP=658
RP=1062

With these settings it reads more media, just like the other drive I didnt have to tweak.

This week I will get the 2 other drives that need adjusting and I'm planning to tweak them same like stated above. More info I will post.

Hiya!

I also have a newer type Philips drive (VAD6035/21) and just performed a successful modding of it. Earlier it did not play CD-R:s but did play at least CD-RW and DVD-R. However, I wanted to be able to play CD-R audio cd:s, so I decided to go for the pot tweak mod.

I measured the values of the pots with a multimeter before modding:
left pot - 720
right pot - 960

Then I turned the left pot just a tiny little bit to the right (not the word tiny, because the pot is really sensitive - just turn it a mere degree or so). After measuring the resistance again I decided I might have turned it too much and turned it back slightly. The resistance of the left pod was then 675 ohms, which i thought might be about right according to a post in this thread, whose writer had had approximately the same starting values as I did.

My Philips-drive now reads also CD-R:s as well as all the other disks it read before. I haven't had the chance to do a more thorough check on different medias, but at least it now does what I wanted it to do in the first place.

Concludingly I'd say you should go for this mod if you need your philips-drive to read more disk-types, but remember to be careful to turn the left pot just slightly and measure the change of the resistance before testing the drive.  As people in this thread have said, you might destroy your lasers by turning the pod too much.
