Now it will ONLY read cd-rw and original cd's, and nothing else, including original game discs and DVD movies. I've put the pot back to its original position (using only a pen mark, not a meter), still no luck.

If the laser is burnt out, then wouldn't it be unable to read any type of cd at all?

BTW, this is my first ever post to any forum, anywhere. You can probably tell.

I have exactly the same problem.

Did everything I could, but can't even get my original games to run.
I can run only CDRWs and original CDs.

Anybody out there ?
Is the laser really dead, or is it possible to try and work our way back to the original settings ?

Dear one-time-poster-boy, your drive is dead. But seriously in every tut, it says if you turn it too far, you can damage it. You really should've spent 12.99 on a multimeter..

Sounds like the new Philips drive is dual laser and you burned out the laser that reads DVDs. I don't like the idea of pot tweaking period... The issue with drives not being able to read certain media is due to problems with reflectivity and therefore gain, NOT laser power. Chances are, the laser was already set at the factory to operate at its rated power and overdriving it will shorten its lifespan or burn it out completely. Too high laser output power could also potentially damage recordable media - well, it MIGHT if you've managed to increase the power to near the levels a recorder uses while writing.

As with everything, YMMV and if the DVD drive is annoying you enough that you're considering replacing it anyway, you may as well pot tweak the drive since you've got nothing to lose. If your drive already works fine and hates one brand of media, just don't buy that brand anymore, lest the idea of buying a new DVD drive for your Xbox appeals to you should something go wrong.

Had to adjust another one yesterday.
Machine was in a Midtown Madness pack, mfg date 2003-09-24. Drive was the 6035 model.
Adjusted left pot from 1362 ohms down to 726 ohms, right pot stayed at 779 ohms.

Now reads Ritek G04 media no problem, also happy with CDRWs, but hates Princo DVDs. Which is no big deal, as loads of Thomson drives hate them just as much!

Came across yet another one last night, mfg date 2003-09-25, same model drive. Didn't need adjusting. Perhaps I should've read the pots anyway...

Found one of the new Philips drives this weekend THAT DID NOT NEED ADJUSTING!
So I thought I'd do you all a favour and measure the pot settings.

Xbox was part of a Midtown Madness pack, manufactured 2003-09-25

Drive was a Philips VAD6035/21

Left pot read 880 ohms
Right pot read 647 ohms
Both readings taken between top-left pin and the adjustment screw itself.

I've got a Philips VAD6011/21
I was getting about 50% readability on DVD-R's mostly Ritek G04.
But it was getting worse, wasn't recognizing more and more.
I decided to jump in and do the tweak on the pot.
I made a pen-mark,
and tweaked slowly and tested...
was getting better and better results, except one disc...
I tried again,
and now NOTHING works.
I was stupid and didn't mark the resistance values!!!!!
Since leaving it alone and trying to return the pots to the original positions, I can get 1-2 originals to boot a bit, then freeze.
Is this fixable?

whats the go with these philips drives in v1.5 thats dont read a thing, then you put the same drive in a v1.0 - v1.3 and it reads fine.

Perhaps V1.0-v1.3 have better power transformation and gives more current to the DVD-ROM => laser a little more powerful => no need to mod (only my opinion)

Can someone please confirm if the drive tray looks like the old phillips...... like so

I have one of the new packs and it looks like the thomson.... but i just wanna be sure before i open it, otherwise im gonna return it.
