Did you power off the XBOX each time you made an adjustment or did you adjust it with it powered on?

NEVER do this with the power on! ohmy.gif

I switched it off, took the case apart and DVD drive top off (with it still in the case), tweaked, and just put the case back on without screwing it down between tweaks; much quicker smile.gif

Once you've found your magic setting, screw it all back together smile.gif

smile.gif  I have just recently ran into one of these brand new Phillips drive and was very upset with the fact that I couldn't get it to work.  Thanks to all the help on these forums I have fixed my issue and wanted to share with all of you my results.  Not using a multimeter (which I know I shouldn't have but had to with time restraints) I went in for the kill and tweaked the left pot on the drive with reading this tutorial:

http://www.xbox-scen.../philipspot.php

That helped alot although not the same drive.  Once I got into my drive and saw the two pots I marked the left one with the felt tip I had and then went ahead and turned the pot not more then from 12:00 to maybe 2:00 if that much clockwise.  What do you know the drive plays the disks I use.  Here are my results from the testing of different disks:

Sony DVD-r = no problem in reading at all
Verbatim DVD-r = no problem in reading at all
Maxell DVD-r = no problem reading at all
KHypermedia DVD-r = Would not read at all
Memorex DVD-r = booted up but would not go as far as the loading screen

I have not tried any DVD+r's yet but I am hoping they have the same result as the top three I used.  Good luck to you all because I know I was scurd going in to tweak something I didn't even know existed till tonight.  Thank you very much for the help even if you think you didn't everyone who wrote in here did help!!  Keep the pimp hands strong and keep on getting at Billy for he will never be unstopable like he thinks he will   wink.gif

The top left point and the screw itself.

I just modded a new 1.5 with that has this Philips drive. I took it apart and turned the pot clockwise little by little. At first it didn't want to read any thing but real DVDs. Kept on tweaking it and get it to read DVD+RW, than CD-Rs.  biggrin.gif I'm going to buy some DVD-Rs tomorrow and see what happens. The owner of the XBox is now happy and so am I, there was an extra $20 in it for me for 10min of work.

I don't know what the ohms resistance is since I don't have a good multi meter to test it with. But I just turned it ever so slightly 'til it booted a CD-R like it was an original copy of the game.

Oh, the CD-Rs were TDK 700MG.

Did you power off the XBOX each time you made an adjustment or did you adjust it with it powered on?

LOL sorry. I got side tracked and forgot all about this post. I see big bigpapa posted with DVD-Rs worked for him. I used Maxell and got it to boot but never made it past the boot up screen. Than it wouldn’t boot it again. Tweaked the pot some more and lost every thing. Went back to the original settings and started over. Got it back to reading CD-Rs and DVD+RW and that’s where I left it. Just couldn't get the damn thing to read DVD-Rs no matter what I did.

Mr Ed, I hard the drive in my XBox sitting on of my Samsung drive so I could work on it with it all still plugged in. I would take the cover off, tweak the pot ever so slightly than put the cover back on and power it up.

I wouldn’t tray it while it was on, who knows what would happen to the drive and or the XBox.

Ok I got a philips drive that only reads origional games and dvds. It was in a newer box and its being a big pain. Incase anyone is wondering here are the origional settings for my pots.

LP(Left Pot.)=1608 Ohm RP(Right Pot.)=705 Ohm (yes they are measured correctly)

At first I turned the LP down in increments of approx. 30 until it hit 500 Ohm and decided I didnt want to go any lower and blow the drive up. I've read all these past posts and found something interresting, when a user with a 1600 Ohm LP set it to a value near that of the RP it started reading more media. So now I have a rather strange theory which states if the LP approx. = RP it may read DVD-R. So I tried it and got my LP set to 720 and low and behold it now reads SOME DVD-R (2x Ritek) backups but not all of them. Im going to experiment further but adjusting the LP and see if I can get my 1x Princo white top dvd-r to work. So if you've gotten the drive to read DVD-R what was the final value of your LP in respect to your RP?

Ok, so what do the two pots control?  One apparently controls the power going to the laser?  What's the other do?

Some people have mentioned that if you adjust them too much you can hear the drive make 'scary' noises when it tries to load a game.  Since lasers don't really make noises what is this?  Just the optical assembly madly scanning back and forth?  Or does one of the pots control how close the assembly goes to the disc and it hits the disc when adjusted wrong?

Anyway, I haven't seen these answered and it seems this info. would be helpful in figuring out the adjustments.

Sounds like the pot's the other way round.  There'll be another two at the bottom.

When I was messing around with this Thompson and after I got it to read CD-Rs, it was a little noisier when it spun up and what not, nothing to worry about I think.

Adjust it down a fraction of a degree then. It might stop the noise and keep the CD-R reading ability wink.gif

LOL crap, it should have been Philips not Thompson... I was looking at the one sitting here on my desk and typed it instead...

Any way, I don't have the drive here any more. Its with its owner and he says he hasn’t had any problems with it.

I was modding a friends xbox with a 2.3b lite and found the new Philips drive.

XBOX 1.4, Western Digital Hard Drive etc

My own box has a Thompson drive which will play anything that I have burned on my Pioneer A06. Datasafe, Verbatim, Datawrite, MMore, but the Philips would not.  In the end it did play the Datawrite DVD-R (4x red).

I just got some new Ritek DVD+R 4x (Ricoh JPN-R01-02) and they also work (got them from www.komplett.ie or www.komplett.co.uk)

Hope this helps

Can anyone tell me if I've fried my laser? I have the new philips drive.

Originally it would read 50% of dvd-r, all cd-rw and 50% of cd-r, as well as dvd and cd.

After tweaking the left pot it was able to read most dvd-r. Unfortunately i decided to turn the pot a little more.........

Now it will ONLY read cd-rw and original cd's,  and  nothing else, including original game discs and DVD movies. I've put the pot back to its original position (using only a pen mark, not a meter), still no luck.

If the laser is burnt out, then wouldn't it be unable to read any type of cd at all?

BTW, this is my first ever post to any forum, anywhere. You can probably tell.
