New Philips Drive?
« Reply #60 on: April 01, 2004, 10:12:00 PM »

i found this out the hard way about mine.  I think i have a v1.5, and i was trying to do a boot cd using evox on a dvd-r, and it wouldn't work... I had to f**king load the evox sort of like how you do the 007 hack... replaced the bootfiles in the 0000000 folder with all the evox   files (renamed evoxdash.xde to default.xde)

then loaded it back to action replay ( i did have to preserve some savemeta files to the saved game tho)

So is there a drive out there I can buy that's compatible with xbox or is there a hardware config, on my existing one to where i can adjust the lens to read dvd-r (if there's such a thing) ?????

Ok domerdel.

1st question... stupid one at that, but I feel it needs to be asked....

Did you make the boot CD using XISO creator to get a true XBOX disc??

2nd question... did you burn the cd at %100 speed?? If so, try %50.

3rd question... did you burn it on to a CD-R or CD-RW??

If you used CD-RW, try CD-R (I NEVER EVER use CD-RW and never have any problems. Note: this is not the case for all people) The brand of CD-R i use is "Laser" and I use the "X Premium 52x" CD-R's. I have had problems with TDK, Kodak, BenQ and some CD-RW but not Laser X Premium.

If ya still got trouble...hmmm. dunno.....

anyone?

However the phillips drive cannot recognize cdr(khyper, memorex and other cheap brand). sad.gif  The reason that i want it to play cdr is because i am trying to install the xbmp/xbmc & play mp3 with it.

two things i have tried.
1) connect an internal cdrw to the xbox using the tutorial below. i have tried both khyper and io magic cdrw drive but no luck.
http://xbox-scene.co...es/dvddrive.php

2) tweak the laser port as per this forum. original p1 setting is 965ohm and turn down until 350ohm but still cannot read cdr except audio cd.  dry.gif decided not to take anymore risk, thus i turned back the p1 to 778ohm. Btw the 778ohm just a random number that i tweaked.

Well still consider myself lucky because i did not fry the dvdrom and still able to play dvdr and original game.

Can anyone kindly tell me, what am i missing here? OR what do i need to do to get the xbox to read cdr.

FYI i am using EVOX for the interface with RemoteX V1.8.281 written in the lower right hand corner.

Right now, i am considering to get myself a pc dvdrom for my xbox. but before i going to spent 30 dollar investing in the dvdrom, would like to get some feedback on the actual problem with my xbox.

Thanks. beerchug.gif

1.8.281?  Christ, how old is that?

Latest one (works well, too) is 1.8.3935 (a.k.a. +3935)

Simple answer to your problem: use CDRW or DVD-R for your MP3s.
Alternate, equally simple answer: FTP the files across from the PC instead of using the Xbox DVD drive.

I ve a Crystal xbox modded with aladdin advance too and the dvd is a philips one but doesnt read cd-r and can not read some dvd-r also, it really sucks (compared to my previous samsung drive).

Any1 know how to modify it (VAD6035 Model)?

Tkx

Try adjusting the pots to the values found in my second post on page 5 of THIS THREAD.

Also, if it's reading deep purple Ritek DVD-R media (Arita, Datasafe, Ridata, Ridisc, Ritek, Traxdata) but not light purple Princo/ProDisc media (most Datawrite, most shops-own-brand, Bulkpaq), I wouldn't risk adjusting it.  For the sake of a few extra pence, use the Ritek media instead.  The only Xboxes that don't read them are the "PS2 Emulator" ones, i.e. fucked ones that don't read anything any more.

got 2 crystal machines both with the new philips dvdrom. they both read cdrs, dvd-rs (loves riteks, reads cheapos but complains) and originals no problem.

is this just a temporary thing? will it need a pot tweak soon - it seems a bit strange because everyone else is complaining about this drive and it seems fine to me.

Following this thread from its inception, I recently had an question:
All of us have seen the new Philips randomly read DVD-Rs, CD-Rs and other media in different combinations (without modification of the POTs). Isn't it very much possible that a specific BIOS allows for better readability? I would really like an answer from someone who knows for sure what they're talking about, since there's a lot of room for guesswork on this.

Hope this leads somewhere smile.gif

Well, the installation of the new drives did seem to coincide with the release of the 1.0.5530 BIOS.  I never tried DVD-R in a grouchy Philips before modding it.

However, as the drive's own BIOS (as opposed to the Xbox BIOS) is responsible for handling the drive's own operations, a newer Xbox BIOS should make no difference.

I just took apart one of my Crystal Pack XBoxes and sold the case on fleabay. Any way, the unit came with one of these Philips drives. I hooked it up to my 1.0 and loaded a movie DVD; LOTR - Return of the King that I have on a DVD, and it played.

DVD is a Maxell, was burned at 1x on a Pioneer A04. It dose not how ever like CD-Rs. I will have to pick up a digital multi-meter and see what the pots are set to. Any way, kinda nice to see a new Philips reading DVD-Rs out of the box.

Are you talking about bios on your modchip?

Unlikely.  blink.gif  What makes you think it would?  unsure.gif

Got as other ppl the crystal box, philips ideed

Tried a few formats like different DVD-R, +RW's

These works:

HP CDRW (burned at lowest speed)
Verbatim DVD-R
Samsung DVD-R

non-working:

cheap DVD-R's
almost all DVD+RW's
