New Philips Drive?
« Reply #45 on: March 15, 2004, 12:10:00 PM »

Heres my story about Philips DVD drive.
Had a samsung drive in my version 1.5 X-Box the motherboard broke down within a year so sent it back to MS. They repaired it and said the DVD drive was faulty and gave me a philips drive instead. Even though I ain't using this X-Box to play DVD-Rs I still would of rather have the more reliable Samsung drive. Any one got the same treatment while there box was being repaired?

Ok here's my two cents so far on this.
I recently replaced my boxes dvd with the new philips 6035/21 and it runs great but only on Fujifilm 1x DVD-R (silver top/purple bottom) and HP 8x CDRW (burned at 4x) Haven't tried cdr's yet.

Now I am pleased with that because the drive is very stable it seems and loads things quickly.  Now what I decided was that buying discs in a retail outlet was too expensive, $38 for 25 spindle of the fujifilm's at the lowest price i can find locally retail. So I read all the forums and decided that the RitekG03 1x Silver/Purple were the way to go. So I find a place with a 100 spindle for $75 free ground shipping. So those are on the way in the mail now. Anyway then i find this horrifying thread about these new drives and the mixed reviews of them being able to read things for some and not for others. However, I wanted to try something and see what information I could get about the Fujifilm dvd-r's that I was using that my xbox likes so well. so i used a tool called dvd info pro, and here are the results of what it told me about my 1x fujifilm dvd-r's.

Imagine my surprise when I saw that my over priced ($1.52 each) at the store Fujifilm's were in fact none other than the very same disc's I am buying for .75 online. And this also it would seem will end my dilema of weather or not my Philips will read the RitekG03 discs or not.
I will reply again once my discs arrive and i've had a chance to test this out.

Anyway here's my dvd-drive info.

Anyone tried to flash the new Phillips drive with the old one's bios? Its pretty easy to do with MKT flash, and it's possible to reflash the drive back with the right firmware.

I solved my own problem.  Trying to adjust the POT down, the drive would not read any DVD's at all any more.  I thought I had burned out the drive.  I decided to turn it up just a bit to 823 Ohms.  Not only does it read the DVD's again, but this solved my problem with the music.  All backups now play the music they are supposed too.  I guess that when adjusting these drives there is a sweet spot they need to be at.   Don't be afraid to turn it up a bit once you find out that it can read what you want it too.  I can actually read more types of media now then I could with the earlier lower setting.

I have a Phillips drive and I frequently have problems when I check a divx movie I burned on a DVDR (princo 4x). During the movie the screen freezes (as if you pressed the pause button) and there“s no way to get it back running unless I reboot my Xbox...
When I copy this same movie to the harddrive, all goes well. Is it my DVD drive or the brand DVD that causes problems?

Hope anyone can help me...Thanx in advance!

why not burning the film in other brand and try it yourself?
it seems to be the disc or the film itselft...

You might have killed your drive. Never turn the pot too far to begin with, always turn the screw in tiny little increments, fractions of a degree, seriously.

Well it really doesn't matter to much since it booted games really sloooow.

But if it can read audio cd's it should still be working right?

I just gor a crystal xbox, and it got the new phillips drive. modded it with the Aladdin advanced + chip, and so far it has read all the discs I've thrown at it. I didnt try it before the mod, so I dont know if its the chip that does it.. The manufacturing date og the box is 0202-2004, its a v1.4, and for some reason it needed the original C:-partition copied to the new harddrive to work.

I have a new crystal box (mfg date 31-01-2004) with the dreaded Philips DVD. Until now, I have only tried original DVDs and a couple audio CD-Rs. One of the CD-Rs could not be read.

I haven't installed a modchip yet, and would like to know if there is a way to find out if mine can read DVD-Rs/DVD+Rs (since some people have had luck with their factory installed Philips'). Is there a message to distinguish a disc that can't be read due to the medium as opposed to its content?

Thanks
