Filename Length Limit?
« on: July 18, 2009, 12:42:00 PM »

the xbox has a file name length limit of 42 characters. THIS INCLUDES THE EXTENSION!

meaning that you can have a file extension longer that 3 characters as long as the total file length including that extension does not exceed 42 characters.

I've created a program to rename files for you called Xbox File Renamer. It requires .NET Framework 3.5

I've noticed this as well.  It's kind of annoying when you have to abbreviate your movies.

I noticed this when I copied subtitles to the xbox, that files with names longer than 42 character couldn't be uploaded  Is it the xbox ftp-server that can't hadle them or what is it? When I start corresponding movies from the smb-share the work just fine (with xbmp). Is there any workaround?

I could ofcourse shorten the file-names, but 42char is sometimes to short and I already have some movies on CD and I can't rename them :)

The 42-char limit is in the Xbox FATX filesystem (filesystem of Xbox hard drive).  See: http://xbox-linux.so...cs/fatxfat.html

If you see longer filenames via a share, it's because the other system supports longer filenames, and because apps like xbmp have been written to support longer filenames than what the Xbox native filesystem supports (when viewing non-Xbox filesystems).  Apps like xbmp will still have 42-char limits when viewing files on the Xbox FATX filesystem.

One thing hit me, is it then possible to format drive F to e.g. FAT32 and keep the subtitles there (because I couldn't get the xbmp to use my smb-share for the subtitles)?

The F drive is formatted as FATX32, you cant just format it with another filesystem.
