I take it you never bothered to look at the README file that comes with ConfigMagic?  blink.gif
Install ConfigMagic on your xbox or create a boot disc (or use AID 3.0)
Select the LOCK HDD option and you're done.

You can also lock/unlock your hdd using the following:

UnleashX
FlashBIOS 3.03
Evox dashboard

List Of Hard Disks And "lockability"

Well, I've read and read at more than one site and if I've missed the answer to my specific problem, well...

Here goes:  got an v.1.0 xbox modded with a matrix and 120gb Western Digital [which I believe to be on the lockable list].  Just last week, the xbox went on the fritz - now I'm getting error codes [unlocked HDD] - no duh!  I'm guessing that the matrix is acting up and so the xbox tries to the load the default bios, but won't start up because it's finding an unlocked drive [is my logic correct or not?] which the default MS bios is not liking.  I'd at least like to get the xbox back up and running for my son and we weren't really utilizing the mod all that much, so I'm not looking to get the xbox back to its modded state before it went bonkers - we just want a working xbox.

My question is this:  assuming it's the matrix chip acting up, is there another way to lock the drive so it's playable with the default xbox bios in an unmodded state?  I keep reading that the xbox has to be modded in order to lock the drive, but if it's the mod chip that's the problem in the first place, then what?  How the hell can I lock the drive?  Am I wrong in assuming that it's the matrix that is the cause of my problems?  I don't get any other error code than #5, so it sure seems like it's a locked/unlocked HDD issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You're an idiot. I've been reading page after page of people not answering these guys questions, offering tutorials for peanut butter sandwhiches. If you don't have solutions to these problems, don't waste peoples times because you feel the need to socialize on the internets.

There is NOT a substantial tutorial for config magic. Many of the peoples problems are just like mine, we currently have a Hard Drives that are NOT locked, we WANT to lock it. We can't install an xbox app to a hard drive we can't boot. How are we supposed to start the application to lock the hard drive, if the application needs to be installed to the hard drive? This is why he asked if configmagic is for hardware mods only!! I've tried making a bootable disc with the default.xbe in it and it does not boot. The leaves hot swapping, but I seriously doubt hot swapping a locked hd with Config magic, with an unlocked hdd on the xbox is going to work.

The only reason I'm not using XBOXHDM this time around is because it has failed to work on 4 different machines, and I'm not always going to have an old machine lying around that happens to work perfectly with hdm, but I will have the xbox. Can I get an Amen from the people just like me who read 6 pages of problems with no solutions.

Let me get this straight....

You dug up a comment from over 5 years ago just to call that person an idiot?  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

There doesn't really need to be a decent tutorial for ConfigMagic. Most of the "dangerous" features are covered by it's included documentation, and it's simple to use. But anyway, you can't easily use it to lock new drives for use with softmodded systems (unless you have a secondary console with a modchip).

A Windows program called "hdparm" can be used to lock drives via a PC. There are some notes on that program here.

LiveInfo can be used to determine the correct code to lock with, but you'll need the system EEPROM to use it.

If you require more information then this, there are better ways to request it. Detailing your situation would be a better start then, um, flaming a guy who posted five years back.

It's time to start a new thread I believe.. people don't like looking through 32 pages of hard drives to try and spot their model!
(NOTE: THE OLD, LONG LIST IS AT THIS LINK)

First... a HUGE thanks for Morpheus99 for starting the original thread! beerchug.gif

Members ivc and lookformeb have both compiled some awesome drive lists - in the same week, without knowing that they were undertaking the same project! Both are awesome links - the main difference is that one can submit info directly to ivc's list, but can't view the drives missing model numbers; while lookformeb's has all the HDD's that were missing model numbers in the original thread (note: without model numbers, its impossible to tell exactly if your drive is lockable, but it gives you a slightly better idea if it's possible).

The links (in no particular order wink.gif ):
Lockability List #1 (ivc)
Lockability List #2 (lookformeb)
Lockability List #3 (MERKOSH)
Check all three links!!

Note: For any new information on hard drives, please submit to this thread as well! It will keep the tradition going, as well as help lookformeb update. If you have an extra few minutes, submit any new info to both this thread AND ivc's site!

- When you post the drive you've tested, it is imperative that you also post the model number!! These can be found on the labels of the hard drives. They really, really give people an exact idea of whether their new drive will work or not.
- The capacity, RPMs, and buffer size and software attempted are extremely helpful. Kit numbers are nearly useless for documentation just as posting without a model number is.

Useful Information: (thanks lookformeb!)
  • ConfigMagic FINAL is arguably the best way to lock your hard drive. It's simple and effective.

  • Hard drive "lockability" is technically known as "ATA Security Mode." On occasion, the hard drive manufacturer may indicate that their drive is compatible with the ATA Security Mode and it may not.

  • Just because a hard drive manufacturer says their drive is ATA Security Mode compatible, it does not mean it will work on the Xbox. It is well known that Maxtor claims that all of their hard drives are compatible, and they are not.

  • If you have a hard drive with similar specifications to one you see here, it DOES NOT mean it is the same drive or it supports (or doesn't support) the ATA Security Mode. The model number is the only sure way to know.

  • I stress once again, the only way to insure compatibility to know the model number.

  • A "debated" drive simply indicates that there are some people that could and could not lock their drive. This may have been because of an outdates version of the software they were attempting to lock with or some other unknown issue

  • The Western Digital WD800BB and WD1200JB appear to carry a bit of a risk when locking. There are many reports of lockability and unable to be locked. Perhaps there were separate batches of drives with different firmware versions on them. No one is really sure why.

  • The compiled chart without model numbers is the least reliable way to check for lockability. It is only there for documentation purposes and should be taken loosely.
Well, that just about sums it up for now. One more beerchug.gif for lookformeb and ivc!!

if you like to know what drive or brand is popular, look at this page on my site. It shows top 10 drives, model serie, brand, size, and a lot more. It's dynamicaly updated whenever a new drive is submitted.

You can load the program either via media or HDD... it works either way.

[edit] I just plugged in a Seagate ST3120026A and it really is almost silent.  I had to listen real hard to hear the drive actually spinning (with the Xbox case OFF).  Oh, and just for the record, this 120GB 7200RPM 8mb Cache drive is lockable with ConfigMagic like the list says.[/edit]

People! You're not reading the big red letters which say "AFTER RUNNING MAGIC YOU MUST RUN XBVSET BEFORE REBOOTING". If Xfree doesnt start for you, SSH in and type "xbvset", this should fix your issues.
