I've installed 4 different Maxtor K01J300 5400 RPM 300GB drives with the 4983.67 BIOS.  No problems with locking any of them.

Do *NOT* use 4983.06 (which does not create a G: partition).  Everything will look good at the start, but once you use over ~250meg the whole f: partition will go blank.

I have 2 40gig drives that I could use in my XBox.  Both are Maxtors.  One is a 4D040H2 which says it's NOT lockable here:  http://xboxdrives.x-...odelnum=4D040H2

My other drive is a Maxtor D740X-6L  which I can't find any information on at all.  If anyone else can fidn any information on this drive, that'd be great.  I want to use it on Live so I can't use it if it's not lockable (right?).

Really hope I don't have to go buy a new drive or scavage one from one of my other computers.

One observation I thought I'd throw out regarding the 200GB seagate drives.  It would seem that the OEM versions don't include the ATA Securty Mode in their firmware.

I've been searching around, but have yet to find a seagate ide flash utility.  Perhaps someone has it, or can get it.  If so, it would help all the people (like me) who have the ST3200822A drive, but can't lock it!

IIRC, an easy way to check a drive in your PC for lock capability in windows:

Picked up a Seagate 200gb 7200rpm 8mb cache drive a few weeks ago

Model number is ST3200822A

LOCKED without any problems using both EvoX and ConfigMagic.

I highly recommend this drive to anyone, 200gb, very quiet, and I've had my xbox running all day and night to test the stabillity (default fan speed), and it's still going strong. The drive does get quite hot to touch, but my xbox hasn't locked once since I put the drive in there a few weeks ago.

Well, so much for the k01j300 always being lockable.

Just installed my 6th k01j300 this weekend, and it won't lock, at least not according to the Xecuter 3 1959 BIOS.

Serial # of this latest unlockable (?) one is:

A8238JAE

Serial # of an earlier one that did lock succesfully is:

A81FPMRE

I have the same drive. I used xboxhdm to lock mine and it worked perfect. I knew that this specific model didn't have too good of a locking record from looking at those charts, but I had to do it because of Seagate's awesome 5 year warranty I got with this drive. I also had a 160gb Maxtor that has an almost perfect locking record to fall back on. I have had no problems at all with this drive and highly recommend it to anybody looking to upgrade.
