I installed a new 80gig Maxtor and now my temps are closing in on 60C, which is 140F, is this getting really hot?????

Please tell me if I should worry.

140 F is fine.. as long as your temp doesnt reach 150 your xbox is fine. However, if you want to lower your temp (below 120 F) you should consider upgrading your stock fan to 12v

I agree if you want to cool your xbox upgrade the stock fan to 12v buy using a 3 to 4 pin adaptor or cut the red and black fan wires and attaching them to the yellow and black hdd wires.

I done this today, but be prepared when you turn it back on, I thought a jet was landing in my front room.

When people say there is an increase in sound thats true it will sound like jet engine.

But if you want a cool xbox then go for it.

Or some other people have replaced the fan totally with a quieter one.

hope this helps

QUOTE (Hath @ Jul 3 2003, 05:12 PM)
the current fan has 7 v running through it, it is rated however for 12 v
so cut the red wire, and splice it to the 12v (yellow wire) on the hdd. simple

Upgrading is easier than replacing the fan. If you are new to modding I would not recommend replacing the stock as it requires too much work.

Whatup1049, thanks for that info, but I do understand what is being said though.

The reason for me buying a new fan is because people are saying that when you get the 12v out of the fan, it's really loud. So, what I am planning to do is get a new fan that has the same capabilities but quieter.

That idea with the wire to the casing is neat too.

Last thing is which type should I get: 3 or 4 wire one and how do I hook it up?

Thanks

ok look it doesnt matter how many pins u get 4 would be easier for because u could just connect it to the molex connector wich is connected to the hard drive and u wont have to cut any wires and if u do buy a fan ur gonna have to buy a 80mm fan and it will not be fun getting it to fit right

You will have to dremel the hard-drive holder and the new fans case a little bit. Then once it fits in glue it down and connect it to the power and your done!

Connect positive (red) to YELLOW wire on the hard-drive molex connector, connect negative (ground) wire to the black wire NEXT to the yellow wire on the molex connector.

just buy a 4 wire fan, then all you have to do is run a molex splitter and hook the fan right into the power cable..so simple.
