« on: May 07, 2003, 01:33:00 PM »

i'm bout to pick my new HDD from an online store..
but am not sure which to pick

one with a 2 MB buffer and another with an 8 MB buffer
the 8 MB buffer is a bit more expensive

will it make a difference?

is it even necessary?

thnx for your aid

That is a good question. I doubt it will make much difference. I know RPM speed does not make a noticable difference (i have read). I am getting that samsung 120 gb 5400 rpm w/ 2mb buffer because it is cheap (~$95). If it does not make a difference why spend the extra money?

well it depends on how much cheaper
the 8MB cache is used by the HDD hardware itself, so its irrelevant to the xbox, meaning access times will be faster.
BUT, not THAT much faster....

I got my WD 120GB HDD with 8MB cache cuz it was only $15 more than the maxtor 120GB HDD with 2MB cache.

its really up to you

look into lockable/unlockable drives though, you might want to lock it.

The benefit is mainly seen when multitasking which would be extremely rare on the xbox. I'd go for size over all else for the HD mod.
