What Modchip Should I Choose ?

Sorry, complete nub, but I'm looking at the SmartXX and Xenium.

Figured a 4th gen would be a better option in the long run.

But any suggestions to help me choose between the two?

What Modchip Should I Choose ?
« Reply #31 on: April 05, 2004, 10:32:00 AM »

I was going to buy an Xbox and get a specific mod chip, but a deal has come up that I may just bite... I need some opinions first though.

I have the chance to buy an Xbox w/ 2 controllers, samsung drive, 80gb hd, chameleon mod chip for $290.  It's that cheap because it's a local deal.

Now, I had never really heard of the chameleon chip before finding this deal, so I am just a little concerned about the chip.  Is there any reason why I wouldn't want to do this?  Would I be able to access Live using that mod chip (meaning is there a way for it to be turned off)?  Emulation?  Media Player?  I assume I'd be able to do all of these things but I'm not 100% sure about anything when it comes to xbox modding which is why I ask.

Thanks for any help.

kznefkt - nothing bad about them. They will preform the same as most "brand name" chips on the market, they just don't have all the bells and whistles.

InterMontano - So many choices! Read, learn, shop around.  http://xbox-scene.com/modchips.php
Check local computer stores for HDD prices.

phoenik - both are great chips, both have had silly little bugs, like any chip. The one advantage the SmartXX has as of this post is that there are no fakes - the Xenium already has a couple fakes out. Be careful what you buy. Check this list for comparisons between their features: http://xbox-scene.co...hips4_table.htm

fingolfin269 - Chameleons are awesome chips. I have one in my Xbox. They are the prequel to the Xenium - one of the most popular chips on the market now, by www.ozXodus.com. Emulation and media player are a YES if you install the right software, and Xbox Live will be available if there is a SWITCH TO TURN THE CHIP OFF and the hard drive is LOCKED TO THE MOTHERBOARD. Make sure you know those two details before you buy if you want to go on Xbox Live.

Im getting an xbox soon and have looked around at the modchips... im thinking of getting either an xecuter chip or a xenium. I plan on getting xbox live in the future, and I think both can be disabled. Im confident in my soldering skills so i dont need a solderless chip... which one, or any other, would be a good choice?

brahm2 - what types of bells and whistles do the better chips have?

If you are considering getting an Xecuter3, wait a little bit longer.. I don't know when the X3s are coming out but apparantly it's in Q1 2004 (soon). Xeniums are a good choice too. If you are looking at "4th generation" modchips, the only other chip you would be looking at aside from the X2 and the Xenium is the SmartXX. All good choices.

As for bells and whistles, I can be honest by telling you that I don't know the features of every chip and even what most of them do. However, the whole list of features is available at the link I posted a few times above, and that's in the first post in this thread: http://xbox-scene.com/modchips.php

Just click the link for 4th gen chips and compare what features might be best for you. If you are thinking about getting a late 3rd gen chip (which are still very competent and functional) check out that list as well.

There is no real wrong choice.. but I can't decide what the best chip for you is! smile.gif

I have been doing a lot of research on modding my new xbox.  I am still confused on a few things:

If I buy an Xenium 4th gen chip and install it, will I be able to play backups of my games or do I still have to flash the bios?  Basically does it come pre-flashed with a bios that will play the backups?

And if I do need to flash the chip, can I do it from a cdrw/cdr?

Thanks,
Coz

coz - No, the Xenium is shipped with it's own custom BIOS, I believe. You can flash the BIOS through it's menu systems with a CD-R/W (media compatability will vary depending on your burner and your Xbox DVD-ROM, be prepared to try a few brands of discs)

soulz4u (assuming you are asking me my opinion) - I haven't used it, or even read about it that much, so I can't offer an opinion on it one way or the other.

why would anyone get a xenium over a smartxx.. i dont understand..

their about the same price

the smartxx has 3.5 mb of user flashable space compared to 1mb on the xenium

it dosent require a serial lcd like the xenium for an lcd display (their much more expensive)

it has cooler features in the OS.. like web based flashing... ed @ chip ftp server... quickboot (absolutly no smartxx display when booting using the eject button) something the xenium dosent have... you are always stuck at the xenium boot screen...

seems like an easy descision to me...

but whatever smile.gif

Hi I want to buy a premodded Xbox and was wondering if somebody had a certain site that sells a premodded Xbox for cheap, or a certain chip that i should choose,  I just don't mess up my Xbox that I have right now.  Oh ya, does anyone know how big halo is on the Xbox harddrive? Will it fit Halo or will i have to get a new harddrive.
If you have any advice on want to read or what to buy, please respond or pm me. Thanks.

Like all others newbee here I’m about to chip my xbox.  unsure.gif

But since I’m working on a lot of others mod’s too, and I’m trying too making the most extreme xbox in Norway, I need your experience in the mod chip area!   smile.gif
If money not is a question, I just wont the best of the best at any price, what is the chip for me?

Best regards

Well, as many other people here I bought an Xbox recentely and was thinking about moding it. I spent 2-3 researching about thison different forums, sites, every I could find. Here are my conclusions (If some of these information are incorrect please tell):

* It is difficult to find the last updated information.
* What all chip do: allowing you to run a custom BIOS on them, and at the end that is what really matters.
* What not all chip do:
 - large BIOS support: some chip are limited to 256k, even though it is large enough for most BIOS
 - multiple BIOSs support: If you want to run Linux AND homebrew applications, this is a requirement. It is also more secure to be able to boot on a 'safe' BIOS in case you did a bad flash.
 - upgradable OS: only 4th generation chip run upgradable/configurable OS. OS's function enables you to control many low level parameters without having to use external homebrew applications. Examples of functions: save/flash xbox/modchip BIOS on HD/modchip flash, save HD, Lock/Unlock HD, NTSC/PAL switching, Zone switching ...
 - recovery BIOS: in case of BIOS corruption, nice to think you can boot on something at least.
 - LAN/USB flash (USB flash can be very usefull if your xbox refuses to boot I suppose)
 - Disable mode
 - Solderless installation
 - Support 1.X Xbox version (not all chip support all xbox version)

Depending on your needs, a very simple chip might do the job for you.
* The Aladdin 64 for example, with its 512k flash looks good if you only need one BIOS and no fancy function.
* X-ecuter 2.3
-lite will offer you 1M Flash and 2 BIOS banks
 -lite+ same but solderless
-pro will give you 1M Flash with multiple banks and is flashable via LPT
* The Xbit provides 2M Flash with multiple banks, is flashable via USB and offer the only solderless system I would really trust.

I am not going to talk about the other generation 3 chips since I havn't studied them enough.

In the generation 4, the X-ecuter 3 is not released yet, but is looks a bit less advanced than the already realsed Xenium and SmartXX. These last 2 chips actually are two branches of the same initial project. SmartXX looks more appealing to me, however I wonder what the Xenium OSv2 will bring.

About the installation I am a bit distrustfull towards solderless adapters. I read and heard many people saying they can disconnect if the xbox is moved around a little bit. The Xbit one looks like the best quality in my opinion, but again, it is only from reading forums and looking at the pictures.

Personnally I ordered 2 SmartXX because I wanted the functionality of the 4th gen chips since I may play around with Linux, adding RAM and some other hardware mods.

Feel free to comment my post, I am a newbie too afterall

Well, I don't like to reccomend one chip more than the others, but I guess if you are looking for the chip that's packed with the most features, it would probably be the SmartXX chip. That doesn't really mean it's the best - but it costs the most wink.gif

Xeniums are still good chips, and my experiences with them so far have been great.

Also, The Xecuter3 chip is being released (soon??), as well as two other chips.. the X-Chip (eb2k) and the X.PLOIT (Team Ankarah).

In the end.. I don't think I can reccomend a "best one" out of those chips.. they are all good smile.gif

okay, so like many other noobs here this is my first post...so far ive bought my 120 maxtor HDD to replace the stock HDD and i have my v 1.2 xbox ready and waiting for its chip...after long and hard research ive come down to 3 choices all 3 in the xecutor 2.3 line (PRO, Lite, and Lite+) ive read lots of faqs to get down these choices. my question is what are the differences between lite and lite plus besides just pogopins? PRO seems to be the main choice here at x-scene but why arn't ppl fond of Lite+, it sems to have all the features Pro does xcept for LPT flashing. Lastly, Do all xecutor chips come with the on/off switch?
thanks in advance
