Nearly there...

Load the save, screen goes black, light goes orange... no music (as the tut says there will be). Can't telnet in... (set my lan IP to 192.168.0.1). Then the disc half ejects, back in and the xbox resets.

I'm not 100% about my connections on the mobo, would this tie in with the above behaviour?

No that is not the correct behaviour. The disc should not eject, and you should be able to telnet into the xbox.
What exploit are you using?

007 and raincoat 0.7 is all i have eva used and I've never had a problem. If you are using 007 check to see if
 the game is infact a version that can do the exploit. You'll find how in these forums. You are telnetting into 192.168.0.64 right?
