I Screwed The Tsop
« on: December 02, 2005, 05:41:00 PM »

Hi,

I decided lately to take my old Xbox and repair it. I saw an horrible thing. I saw the mess I made like 1 or 2 years ago. I put solder all over the pins of the TSOP.

Now, I can order a LPC. If I fully desolder the TSOP, and use a LPC modchip, what will happen?

Photos of the mess will come.

Thanks for the answer.

Here's the photo :

Good thing, I already have a new Chameleon 1.3 in my hand.

Now if I take some desoldering braid, and remove the whole TSOP, do i have a chance to rescue it? I don't want to throw it if I still can do something.

Thanks again.

If your question is...Will an xbox function with no tsop present at all, just an lpc modchip?  The answer is yes.  But unless your solder skills have improved drastically since you did that, you may cause even more damage trying to remove it.  Perhaps you should try to remove as much solder from there as you can, making sure there are no solder "bridges".  Then install your chip and see if it works.

Well I've got a friend pretty skilled in soldering (17 years of soldering and repairing stuff), who can help me. something I could do too, is remove as much as I can, then use a cutter to remove the TSOP altogether.

Is that an option too? Or should I ask this guy? I'd prefer not to, because my dad isn't supposed to know that I made this boo-boo, and since the guy works for him... If he sees a Xbox next to the soldering station, he's gonna ask.

I'll try to remove some with soldering braid. I trained myself on other stuff, and bought a real soldering iron. We'll see. After all, I was going to throw i away, if I can rescue it, good for me!

Thanks for the advice.

(I made this while filling the LPC points, a bit of solder jumped on the TSOP, and I panicked and spread the thing like butter on a toast)

we all make mistakes.....but why put solder all over the lpc?

But yea if you get that chameleon installed properly your xbox will work, but you won't be able to turn it off because the tsop is ruined.

Well a little bit of solder jumped on it, and while panicking and trying to remove it, I just spread it all over. I didn't have desoldering braid at that time, and didn't knew about it, too.

Thanks for the advice everyone, I think I'm going to remove it altogether because if you watch closely I kinda screwed it, I think that even if I could resolder it, well, with the heat of the iron I toasted it. I had a hard time reading the hynix word.

dude I just wanna know how the hell you managed to jack that board up that bad?!?!  It pains me to see that.  Check that soldering GUN to see how many watts it is.  My suggestion is to just clean it up by getting some desoldering braid and installing that chip and call it a day.  I think after you clean up all the solder it might boot retail.... but  laugh.gif I dunno.

Hi all,

I took the shortest way: I cut the traces. It won't boot anymore. I carefully checked if I didn't go on traces that I shouldn't have cut, but it's not the case. So maybe my modchip is fried (there was a strange dim light coming from the LED when I booted it, don't remember when though)... Do you think I should order a new one before throwing the box altogether?

Thanks.

You cut them? ugh, you shouldve asked ... the board wont boot without it ... you'll have to solder it all back on for it to boot... email me though, i might take the box off your hands... name your price

Hmmm, somehow I think that Xbox is now destined to become land fill, along with all the copies of E.T.
