What Are Differences: Tsop Flash Vs Modchip?
« on: March 04, 2004, 10:47:00 AM »

From what I have read so far, TSOP flashing gives about the same end result as a modchip, except that you can't play xbox live because normally you have no means to run in the 'retail' state with a TSOP flash. (Well maybe you can rig a switch and flash individual banks, but the details of this seem harder to find out about).  Anyone found a good tut on bank switches on TSOPs?

And also I gather that a TSOP flash is riskier for noobs, in that if you make a mistake in the flashing you might not be able to boot the box anymore and would have to resort to adding a modchip (I assume a modchip that can be flashed with a programmer).  What's a 29-wire mod, is that the kind you'd have to use to recover or would a regular X2.3 do it?

Are there other differences?  Large HDD support is just a function of the bios software and not the chip hardware, right?  (Always use the latest bios, e.g. 4981.06 or .67 or evox M7)

Cost: If I were only going to mod just one box, I might go with a modchip because by the time you get all the stuff together (memory card, orig 007 or mech game, borrow a modded box) and read enough to do TSOPs, you have spent about the same money and time. And there's less risk.  But then once you've done one TSOP, you can do the next one really easily, so TSOPs are kind of cool.  Some friends that want their box modded have trouble finding $50 so TSOP is a pretty nice option for them.

i do it with a modded 8 gig drive thats unlocked, then all i have to do is solder the board, hot swap the new drive and use hdddriver to copy the modded drive to the new one, then boot and flash from the screen if a new one, or if fyou put the raincoat flasher out og the 007 gamesave hack in the gouki modless archive, you just flash from there too, but just make sure you have the right bios that you want in the raincoat on e if you do it that way, ive never been able to flash it more than once, i think it can only flash over a retail bios or somethin but, yeah totla time w a modded hdd and a v 1.0 or 1.1, for me 1.5-2 hrs tops, newer ones always give me hell but i can do em in under 4, depending how hard it is to get the swap to work, but, definitely worth the effort if youre not using live, and xbconnect is so much cheaper (ha!) but...    yeah, not hard, and

someone correct me if i'm whong but can t you, with a 1.0/1.1 just leave/swap in the factory hdd and flash back to factory bios to play live, then flash back w/ evox flasher? i know thats a lot of evil flashing but wouldnt it work? just a hunch, never even used live b4

i can do a tsop flash in under 30 minutes and with the 1.0 and 1.1 xboxs put a switch in it for a multibios setup (leaving your original in there for live). the tutorial is in the tutorial page a18,a19,ground,and i think 3.3v. i only hook up a18,a19, and ground to split the tsop in 2. there are step by step tutorials on exactly how to flash the tsop, if you don't follow it chances are you are gonna mess something up.
