Unable To Split My 1mb Tsop And Flash
« on: February 22, 2004, 01:37:00 AM »

PLEASE HELP... OUT OF IDEAS...

I have a v1.1 xbox with 1mb BIOS. Currently it has Xecutor 4979.06 in all four banks.

I have connected a switch to A19 and ground in preparation to split and switch between bank 4 and 3 (or was it 2?). Anyhow the switch is off... I created my 1mb BIOS using the following bios MS+4981+4981+MS, where MS = original MS retail BIOS and 4981 = Xecutor 4981.06 BIOS. I lock my hard disk under EvoX, flash the BIOS with the newly created multi-bios. Evox does it's thang... Erase, Flash, turn off xbox. I then turn on the xbox expecting to see the MS dash, but nope. I see Xecutor and EvoX starting up again. I flip the switch on (on = ground A19), same thing on next boot. The funny thing is that I go to EvoX settings and look at the Kernel information and it still says 4979.06 when it should have changed to 4981.06. Flashed twice = same thing. So I flash the xbox with just the 256kb version of the 4981.06 bios. Comes up as expected. Go to EvoX settings and see the Kernel info as 4980.06. Is this supposed to be like this?

Anyhow, what am I doing wrong? Why is EvoX pretending to flash by BIOS, but it's not when using the multi-bios 1mb file? Also did I create my multi-bios correctly? -- by that I mean the order of bioses.

Thanks.

a switch on A19 will switch between banks 1+2 and 3+4, NOT between 3 and 4.
so MS+MS+X+X would be a proper multibios.
also, make sure that A19 is only connected to GND in one switch position, but not in the other.

Firstly if you are just doing a A19 switch then the bios cuts in two,  you need to make your bios like this...  M$+M$+4981+4981
The switch cuts the bios straight down the middle.

If you are flashing the full meg though, you need to disable or place the switch in the center (if it can) to flash the whole bios, otherwise, flash a 512k 4981 to one half, boot off it, then flip the switch and flash a 512k M$.

Yes the kernel of X2 4981 shoud say 4980 as 4981 was an unofficial release which fixed a very small error in 4980, the change was so minor, the Xecuter boys left it as it was.

Thanks for the response, guys.

Okay so in another words, when A19 is grounded, what bank does the xbox boot from? Is it bank number two?

When A19 is not grounded, everything should be as normal and the xbox should boot from bank number four, right?

Let me know if my thinking there is right.

Also, I still can't flash a 1mb multi-bios with the switch off (A19 not grounded). EvoX will do it's thing, but it doesn't get flashed for some reason. Why is that? It's weird. Is there something I'm missing? Since all four banks already contain X 4981.06 now, can I just flip the switch and flash the original MS BIOS on the first two banks? Will it work?

Sorry for the many questions, but I need some help. Thanks

Okay. I know what my problem was now. The MS BIOS was not really a MS BIOS, but X 4979.06. I just got them mixed up.

Anyhow, I got the right MS BIOS flashed onto the first two banks and X 4981.06 onto the last two. My problem now is that the Xbox is now dead. I think I need to isolate the xbox from seeing all four banks no matter what the position the switch is set on.

How do I do this? I need to be able to isolate banks 1 and 2 when A19 is NOT grounded. And isolate bank 3 and 4 when A19 is grounded.

you need to switch from connecting a19 ->gnd and a19 ->VCC so the xbox will only see half of the bios at a time, there is tutorial about it.  HERE

What you need is a SPDT switch.   The centre pin is connected to A19.  Ground is on one side and VCC is on the other side.  I use the VCC3.3 instead of VCC5 that is in that tutorial.  It works fine, and in theory using less voltage puts less stress on system.  I use radio shack part # 275-409  SPDT Submini Slide switch.  They come 2 in a pack for $5 canadian.   With a little cutting you can get it to fit through one of the holes under the front panel where it is accessable and almost invisible.

Yeap. That works. VCC -> A19 = boot off of 3rd & 4th bank. Thanks.

Now my only problem is finding a version 1.1 retail BIOS. Unfortunately, I didn't save mine. I thought I did, but it's nowhere to be found. I tried a v1.0 retail BIOS and a 1.5 retail BIOS. Both did not boot. Anybody have a retail MS BIOS for a version 1.1 xbox? If you would e-mail it to [email protected], that'll be great! If it works on my box, I will send you an unbanned EEPROM in return.
