Aargh! I Flashed A 256k Bios To My 1.0, 1.1 Xbox

****** Mods Please Pin This ******

Please note: This tutorial does not apply for the X2 4978. The 4978 is a 1MB Bios in it's own right.  It uses the WHOLE Bios chip.

So, you flashed a 256K File to a 1MB Bios. Don't panic this IS recoverable.

First the theory.
Consider the 1MB Bios as being able to hold 4 256K bioses, or 4 Bios sectors. In the original Xbox they are the same bios just repeated 4 times.
When you flash a 256 K bios file to a 1 MB Bios, this means that Sector 1 is used, but sectors 2, 3 and 4 are empty. When the Xbox boots it actually boots from sector 4, which is now empty, and hence will FRAG.
So, to get the XBox to boot we need to force it to look at sector 1. Then we can reflash it with the correct 1MB file.

Now the Practical....
Step 1: Forcing the box to boot sector 1

To force the Xbox to boot sector 1 we need to ground the A18 and A19 Address lines to the Bios.
To do this you will need 2 peices of Wire approx 12" long. Why so long you ask? We will need to cut these after booting so that we can flash our 1MB Bios file.
Now Observe the picture below
user posted image
You will notice that A18, A19 and the Ground point are circled in red. (Please note: the picture shows the UNDERSIDE of the Xbox main board)
Solder one end of both wires to the ground point.
Now solder the other end of one of the wires to A19.
Next Solder the other end of the remaining wire to A18

Reassemble XBox with BOTH wires in such a position that you can see them.

Press the power button You will be pleasently surprised to see your Xbox boot

Step 2: Reflashing with a 1MB Bios
**This guide assumes you are using EvolutionX / Slayers Install disk to flash your bios**
FTP you Favourite 1MB Bios to the C:Bios folder.
Select Flash Bios from the system menu
The Program will ask you which bios you want to flash. Select the one you FTP'd in a moment ago
The Program will then Autodetect the Bios chip in your Box,
When it says press Y to flash cut both wires one at a time.
Then Press Y and flash your bios.
The XBox will now shut down.

Press the power button and check that the Xbox boots. It should.

Remove all the wires fitted earlier.

Go and have a  beerchug.gif  and pat yourself on the back for a good job done biggrin.gif

Hope this helps.

Howdy,

Edited for Coherence sake.

My Xbox Ver 1.1 with 1mb bios with bios 4977.

Flashed with 256k  Xecutor 4978 Bios via Slayers 2.0 boot CD.

Chip was recognized, erased and flashed with 256k 4978,

Rebooted. Now I get 2x Green flash then a Frag.

Did this great Tut, still no go. Checked all solder points, everything Solid.

Now when I reboot it's frag all the time. Wires or No wires.

The 4978 is a true Single 1MB Bios. There's no doubling / Quadrupling up on the Bioses for that one.
So where you got a 4978 256K from I do not know, but I can guarantee this method won't work.

I wouldn't flash a 256 if the bios chip size is 1mb, what if your 256 bios got corrupted before you flashed it!

Always use the correct size just in case!

Use X2BM (Xecuter2 bios manager) to put your 256k bios's together to create a 1mb bios file you can also mix your 256 bios files and use the tut below to switch between bios's!

PS. The tutorial above has already been made ages ago and is in the tut section-

NEVER Do this! always use the correct size of bios file. If you only have the 256K version use a bios file manager to rebuild it to the correct size.

Someone should pin this.  I spent 6 hours (with no success) trying the X2 and Matrix (since i've got the chips lying around) methods to fix a spent tsop.  I had flashed it thru raincoat with a 256k by accident.  Now I spend 5 minutes on this method and its fixed!!!

No need to bump biggrin.gif. I think it should be pinned, but PsiDOC has just shown us how smart he is actually, hehehe wink.gif. It's a simple method based on the TSOP splitting. It's just logical. I only wonder does it work od 1.1 boxes. Does a 4 way TSOP split work on 1.1 boxes?

And I wonder how is it possible that my Xbox (1.0, ST TSOP) worked after flashing with 256KB bios file image biggrin.gif.

Good job, man. Pretty useful for noobs, and not only for them wink.gif.

A.Z.BEST® Long time no hear mate. smile.gif How did you get on with the 5558 I sent you?

This method works on all 1.0 / 1.1 Xboxes provided the 256 flash was the correct type IE: Multiversion or the Correct version specific flash for the Version of Box.
I have tried and tested this on my own, and numerous other 1.1's as well as 2 1.0's with this problem.
So long as the flash has completed AND it's the correct 256k flash for the Box. The this is the way to resurrection.

If you used EvoX Above 1.8.3582 It automatically makes up a 1MB Bios out of a 256K Bios wink.gif
