Make Your Own Actionreplay

Hardware needed:

1.  An Xbox joystick.
2.  An Xbox joystick extension cable (optional if you don't mind cutting your Xbox joystick's cable apart).
3.  A standard USB device cable.
4.  Soldering iron.
5.  Electrical tape.
6.  Wire strippers or sharp knife.
7.  A memory card (for the savegames).

Software needed:

1. XbReader memory card drivers for Win98SE/2K/XP
2. ActionReplay Software

Instructions:

Run the ActionReplay installer, then unzip XbReader.zip to a happy fun temporary storage folder.

Basically, you're doing the "connect the Xbox joystick to your PC" mod...  Cut the plug that plugs into the Xbox from your joystick/extension cable.  Then cut the device end (the part that plugs into printers/scanners/MP3 players/etc.) plug from your USB cable.  Strip back the insulation from both cables.  This should reveal some braded wire that you need to pull back and keep out of the way for now.

Next, you'll want to carefully remove the foil that covers the 4 wires in the USB cable and the 5 in the Xbox joystick/extension cable.  Strip each wire about 1/4" except for the yellow one (it can be ignored, it is not used) and solder the matching colors together.  Use electrical tape and ensure each wire is individually wrapped to insulate it from the others.  Now pull back the wire braid on each cable and solder it together.  Finally, tape the entire thing up with electrical tape.

Now that you've got it wired up, you can plug it into your PC.  The first message you'll see is that a generic USB hub was detected.  You'll then be prompted for drivers for an unknown device.  Unless you want to use the Xbox controller as a joystick (in which case you'll need Xbox HID drivers, available from here), you can just ignore this message.

You can now insert a memory card into the joystick and you will get that annoying unknown device message again if you didn't install the joystick drivers - that's okay, just hit cancel.  You should now get another message that says "xbmc" or similar found - point Window's driver search to the folder you unzipped XbReader to and the drivers should install.

Finally, run the ActionReplay software and you can drag and drop your savegames onto your memory card.

if you already have your xbox controller being used as a joypad on the computer (like the HID drivers are already installed and everything), can you just throw on the memory card and launch the ar software and have everything work as normal?
and isn't this pretty useless if you've modded your xbox? couldn't you just ftp into it and xfer the savegames?

If you've already got an Xbox controller connected to your PC, yup - the software does all the magic.

Of course, if you already have access to a modded Xbox, you wouldn't need this...  But for newbs with no modchip or Action Replay, it's really the cheapest way to get the 007/Mechassault savegames on to a memory card.  All the pinned threads here mention you need an Action Replay, Mega-X key or another modded Xbox.  The truth is, you just need the software in the original post and an Xbox joystick connected to your PC.

I made my own cable, bought a Mad Catz  8mb card "Officially Licensed for Xbox" for 19.99. at Best Buy. Item # 4507.
Downloaded XBreader and ActionReplay Software. Hooked it up, installed the Hid driver on xp system then tried the XBreader afterwards and I get the same error as the previous poster. Unable to find suitable drivers etc. So I tried it on my laptop which has win2k on it this time bypassing the hid driver install, and followed the posted instructions 100% step by step...and still unable to find driver.

I'm thinking for the $10 I spent on the extension cable it would have been smarter for me to just get the action replay kit for $29.99 in the first place. Gong to try to return the card tommorow...but I'd rather someone post a solution.

Doing a search on google and allweb for Xbreader returned 0 results.

Any help would be appriciated.
Thanks.

The .INF file for the XbReader drivers was missing the entries for the device ID for the MadCatz memory cards...  It should be updated now, try dowinloading it again.

The action replay software is incredibly picky about savegames...  As far as I've experienced, the only things it will allow in the root folder of the ZIP are:

UDATA
gameid.ini

I had the same problem with 007savewithraincoat.zip, but I fixed it by opening the ZIP and deleting all the extraneous crap (readme files, .nfo notes, etc.).  I also updated the version of raincoat and added the BIOS image I wanted while I was in there...  Worked like a charm.  I haven't looked at the Mechassault exploit, but I imagine it's the same process.
