Hardware needed:
1. An Xbox joystick.
2. An Xbox joystick extension cable (optional if you don't mind cutting your Xbox joystick's cable apart).
3. A standard USB device cable.
4. Soldering iron.
5. Electrical tape.
6. Wire strippers or sharp knife.
7. A memory card (for the savegames).
Software needed:
1.
XbReader memory card drivers for Win98SE/2K/XP2.
ActionReplay SoftwareInstructions:
Run the ActionReplay installer, then unzip XbReader.zip to a happy fun temporary storage folder.
Basically, you're doing the "connect the Xbox joystick to your PC" mod... Cut the plug that plugs into the Xbox from your joystick/extension cable. Then cut the device end (the part that plugs into printers/scanners/MP3 players/etc.) plug from your USB cable. Strip back the insulation from both cables. This should reveal some braded wire that you need to pull back and keep out of the way for now.
Next, you'll want to carefully remove the foil that covers the 4 wires in the USB cable and the 5 in the Xbox joystick/extension cable. Strip each wire about 1/4" except for the yellow one (it can be ignored, it is not used) and solder the matching colors together. Use electrical tape and ensure each wire is individually wrapped to insulate it from the others. Now pull back the wire braid on each cable and solder it together. Finally, tape the entire thing up with electrical tape.
Now that you've got it wired up, you can plug it into your PC. The first message you'll see is that a generic USB hub was detected. You'll then be prompted for drivers for an unknown device. Unless you want to use the Xbox controller as a joystick (in which case you'll need Xbox HID drivers, available from
here), you can just ignore this message.
You can now insert a memory card into the joystick and you will get that annoying unknown device message again if you didn't install the joystick drivers - that's okay, just hit cancel. You should now get another message that says "xbmc" or similar found - point Window's driver search to the folder you unzipped XbReader to and the drivers should install.
Finally, run the ActionReplay software and you can drag and drop your savegames onto your memory card.
