Using Chipped Xbox To Upgrade Hdd In Soft Modded Xbox
« on: April 23, 2006, 07:43:00 PM »

if you have the Xenium ICE installed and running fine, typically a HDD upgrade is achieved through the HDD upgrade wizard in disk tools. I'm not sure though how this will affect your softmod stuff.

The upgrade wizard will copy all existing partitions (and any files they contain) across to the new drive as well as create an F drive (or F plus G drive....depending on your drive size and what you opt for) out of the left over space.

As long as you double check that all the necessary files for your soft mod are present and in the appropriate partitions before removing the ICE (i pressume you're going to remove the ICE....otherwise whats the point of the softmod stuff) I don't imagine ther will be a problem.

I've never done a softmod but I understand that you replace the original the bios on the TSOP with a hacked one like X2 5035 or something. In this case you may want to check that the bios setup is consistent with what you want to do with the partitioning of the drive (ie if you're upgrading to a 300 gig or larger drive, you're going to want to use an F plus a G drive, in that case you may need to make sure the bios is set to recognise the G partition. If you're F drive isn't going to be larger then 237 gig though then this isn't an issue)

Actually I want to have to use the chipped XBOX to create a larger HDD for use in the softmodded XBOX instead of using a gutted PC. xboxhdm, and the larger HDD.  I used the chipped XBOX to create the partitions and FTP the C and E from the modded XBOX but am not sure where to place the HDD locking key from the softmodded XBOX so Xenium can lock the HDD appropriately.

One way is to install the chip into the softmodded xbox temporarilly.. Another would be to backup the eeprom from both boxes, and temporarilly flash it to the chipped one to lock the hdd.. make sure they're similar xbox versions to avoid any problems though... Tutorial here:

I see, sneaky way of doing it. I'd go with applegurus first suggestion ans temporarily install the chip in the softmodded box then re-lock the harddrive there. Alhtough it could be done, messing around with your EEPROM is most likely going to land you in trouble. If you're set on trying that method though, heres how I see it being done.

Set up the HDD file consistent for the softmodded box. Lock it using XOS then use EEPROM tools to backup the EEPROM to bin. FTP the EEPROM.bin file now in teh root of the E drive onto your PC. Open the EEPROM.bin file with Live Info. Actually as I sit here and try to think this through....yeah just go with the temporary chip install cause this is just gonna be a mess.

Well somehow Bob's my uncle.  My chipped and softmodded XBOX's are both 1.6's now with 120 Gbyte HDD's.   Here's what I did :

Softmoded XBOX using MechAssault exploit from NDURE's 1.1 (used chipped XBOX to write Memory Card which unmodded XBOX MDASH let me xfer to retail HDD).  Bought original Mech Assault used at EBgames for $2.99 plus tax!

Downloaded Slayers 2.6.

Used Appleguru's guide (which is TREMENDOUS), and instead of ConfigMagic (it didn't like 1.6's, I guess) from the Slayer's disk I used XOS to load EEPROM from bin file which I saved using Slayer's into c:\backup and FTP'd to PC.

XOS handled partitioning new larger HDD.

But I had to remove and redo softmod on the SoftXBOX which went like a champ since game save was already on larger HDD.

I misstepped and locked my chipped XBOX HDD before I changed the EEPROM to the softXBOX and had to burn a CD-RW with the backup bin file from the chipped box.  Thankfully XOS recognized the CD drive as a possible source for a bin ... whew ... otherwise I'd need to put either the original RETAIL softmod HDD or newly created LARGER HDD and FTP the chipped EEPROM and run XOS to replace the softmod EEPROM.

All-in-all still easier than taking apart my serial ata pc and figuring what all to do add a eide drive.

Glad to hear you got it working smile.gif FWIW.. there's a 1.6 version of configmagic wink.gif

new hdd with evo-bootable dash, copy all files from pc onto new hdd, and then put that hdd back into the newly
softmodded xbox?
