Big Harddrives
« on: April 10, 2006, 12:30:00 AM »

Just wondering if anyones ever had issues using a 400 gb or better hd in a box with a xenium.  I'm thinking of picking up another used box to use strictly as a media server.  I figure a 400-500 gb drive should be plenty.  Might even consider a 300, havent really priced them all yet.  Seeing as how I have one box in my computer room (my primary box, xenium chipped), my sons box which is softmodded because I wanted a xenium for it and we all know about the stock issues, and one I just picked up today for my living room to use as a media center.

Again, just looking for comments on any compatibility issues with large drives and boxes, especially chipped with a xenium (why I'm posting in this forum).

Thanks guys.

I know that some people experience problems using the harddrive upgrade wizard with 300 gig seagate drives that have 16 MB buffer. The problem doesn't occur with all 16 MB seagate 300 gig drives though. not sure if the problem would persist with 300+ drives but I suppose it wouldn't go away. Might just want to avoid a 16 Mb buffer.

As to drives of 400-500 gig, I have seen a few peoples sigs with drives that big but cant think of who they were. I've definately seen a 500 gig Maxtor drive in someones sig. When you format the drive, I guess you'd definately want to go F: plus G:, problem is G: might still end up being greater then 237 gig!, you'd just about need a H drive I reckon! Haha.

But even if you do run into formatting issues, there's ways to get around that with Auto Installer Deluxe anyways so I reckon yeah go large!
