D0 Wire Shorted Out Spice Chip
« on: February 15, 2006, 01:16:00 PM »

I recently modded a 1.6b with a xenium SPice with no major problems and got it working with EvoX dash + APPs. However yesterday the xbox rebooted 3 times & fragged with the chip LED red. Just as i suspected when i opened it up a wire had come out of the d0 hole, i pushed it back in but the xbox would not power up at all.
If i remove the chip and the SP adapter it boots into M$ no problems. So my question is did i short the ICE chip or Just the SP adapter? can i use the recovery switch on the ICE or do i bin the lot and start again?
All advice is allways much apprieciated.
Thnx

No, no lights on adapter or chip or box, when i power up the box i can hear a very faint clicking on the circuit board. I nearly thought i had fried the power board/fuse. But I am worried that i have dammaged the D0 hole and a new chip ( waiting for delivery ) will still fail to boot. Mike302 have you tried any thing to fix it yet?

Right then i just figured it out.
the first piece of the adapter ( black part with the D0 wire ) has spring loaded pins that go in the LPC one of these has a broken spring and is not making a good contact. I put the supplied rivets in the corresponding LPC hole and i am now getting red lights on the adapter but they don't stay on. I will now have to wait for another adapter.
I'm so glad i didn't fry my box smile.gif  hope this helps.

hi xxzonexx,
thanx for all the threads you definatley do your home work, i will check them out.
I dont think the chips are fake its probably just my lack of expertise in installing the chip ( definately the most common reason i think ) or in my case a broken adapter.
One thing i have noticed is all the non-solder chips and adapters are much more prone to faults simply because they have so many intricate contact points to the LPC and board. My experience with installing spiderchip was not good and the SPIce is 100% better. Flashing the chip using the USB is great especialy if your DVD has trouble reading disks, and when it started fragging i was able to just unplug the SPIce and the Xbox returns to M$ boot no problems.
There must be pros & cons with soldering chips too so don't get too paranoid. I beleive that my chip is undamaged ( i wont know until my new adapter arrives )and only the adapter is making a bad contact, pehaps Xenium knew this fault which is why they included a recovery switch.

I finaly got a new sp adapter and installed it and the chip no problems. The box is now working great.
Just one weird thing, after delivering the xbox to my friend (very carefully i thought) it fragged again with a red LED on the chip. I still had to open up the box and re-sit a loose wire on the adapter.
Everything now works fine. smile.gif the OS on the chip is easy and i am FTP ing no probs'.
My only complaint really is that the sp adapter is prone to problems, i found it easier without the plastic template and don't be surprised if the connections become loose at any time maybe heat from the board or just from knocks.
hope it helps,
Good Luck all

drewdown is your xbox a 1.6b only i've been told "if you have a 1.6b, recovery mode on the ICE wont work (This is used to upgrade the chip's onboard OS) ...not sure if the new 24k will fix"
