Xbox Is Freezing
« on: December 04, 2004, 06:15:00 PM »

Hey guys, recently my xbox has been freezing up and I was trying to not be a big newb and jump to the forums and cry about it so heres what I tried.

1.) delete files in X:\ Y:\ Z:\ E:\CACHE
2.) try a different bios (tried indi bios and M7)
3.) try multiple games and emualtors
4.) try different dash (avalaunch and thc lite)
5.) upgrade my Xenium OS (went from 2.0.0 to 2.0.1)
6.) turn off cold cathode jewel mod  (thought it might have been eating power)

Most of the time when it freezes it seems to be accessing the hdd, during hdd loads or saves but it also freezes if left idle.  When frozen all bios functions stop meaning IGR doesnt work and if I press the eject button the xbox resets (but doesn't play flubber animation just jumps to 'X').  All lights stay there proper colors including the internal xenium light.  I also have goten a few dirty disk errors while playing backed up games.  I was going try playing a hard copy of the game but figured that since it wasn't a bios problem the same would occur since u can't turn xenium off only flash tsop onto xenium.  So i've come to think it's either the chip or a HDD fault.

Before this all began I was thinking of installing linux, put the CD in and let it start the boot up process but then decided against it and turned it off manually b4 it had fully started linux or even gotten to the install screen.  (Not sure if this is the problem or not)  Any advice would be awesome, PM me or e-mail or IM me Sayguh is my screen name.  I'll be checking the forum too :-P  I'm desperate, I'm sure u guys know how much it sucks to play NFSU for 30 min. finally win the race and then have it freeze while saving lol.

My ideas are to try to reset the chip or to reformat a partition on the hard drive though i rather not do either if it's another problem.  Please help me out guys :-D  I love my xenium and my xbox :-D  I'm sorry if i've left anything else out.  Please respond :-)

One thing i have noticed is that my E drive is almost completly full, i think i'm going to try to delete a lot of unused saved games from it suing the MS dash.  Could this be causing the freezes?  Trying to write to cache only to find that the partition is full?  If this is the case, how can i make that partition a lil bigger?

I have the EXACT same issue with a brand new modded XBOX 1.6b, 200GB hard disk, SmartXX.

I dont believe 'reformatting' or 'cleaning off the drive' will help this situation, since I just did that TODAY. Its a brand new machine.

The drive is practically empty. C 300MB free, E 4800MB free, F 180GB free. Only one game on it.

Playing emulator seems to work well for a long time but playing games off HD will crash after about 30 minutes.

Testing HD temp after playing emulator came up 116F
Testing HD temp after playing game off HD 140F

My guess is this is a heat issue, created by constant disk access such as video or audio off of a game. The system does not respond with the typical overheat color. It just locks up
