Suggestions For Securing The Solderless Chip
« on: August 24, 2004, 01:51:00 PM »

Any suggestions for securing?  I've heard hot glue and duct tape.

Please resist the urge to tell me to solder it -- I bought a circuit board and I'm practicing, but for this xBox, I'm sticking with the solderless install.

Here's some background if you care:  Xenium Ice Solderless install went very smoothly, but unlike the reviews I read, even with the new solderless install, the chip moved around after only a week or so.  I got the chip reseated, but whenever I turn the box upside down to put the screws back in, the chip comes unseated.  Box and mod chip are working fine for now but the case is not screwed down.

Thanks for your help.

---------------------------------
Edit:  Despite the poll, something just didn't sit right with me (pun intended) leaving the screws out of the case in order to prevent the chip from becoming unseated.  To anyone reading this now who hasn't figured out the soldering, the paper trick works wonders.  Fantastic connection and the screws are back in place.  If only Xodus could supply a quality solderless that didn't need the paper (either angle it slightly being thicker by the screw, or provide a hybrid pin-header as mentioned below) it wouldn't be necessary.  My recommendation, Xenium Ice is a great chip (and by that I mean it is the only one I have used and it has done everything I hoped it would and the built-in features are useful to me), check out one of the other solderless adapters, though.

don't worry about it, you don't have to screw the case back together. That is just more of a hassle when you have to open it up again.

edit: I will bet you $10 says that half the people here xbox's arn't screwed back together.

YOu're probably right on that, so I won't take the bet, but thanks for the reassurance.  Still, I'd love to be able to move it around without worrying that I'm going to mess up the connections.  Any info on whether glue or tape is appropriate would be helpful.  Thanks.

I've heard that they will both work, since they don't conduct electricity. you could also try the paper trick (do a search in these forums).

i soldered mine in, but i dont think i'd want glue everywhere inside there.  I dont know how loose the solderless adapter is, i know on my x2.3 solderless it hasnt moved yet, but i think people had more issues with this solderless adapter.  Tape it see how that works, if it doesnt work good try another method.

edit: plus sounds like you might try and solder it later on, so do like someone stated above, leave the screws out.  dont want to have to remove all that glue if you decided to solder it in later.

I wouldnt use duct tape or glue as they may damage something if you peel it off.  I still say solder it in and if you cant solder get someone to do it who can.  It will save you the most headaches.

Thank you.  Pointing me in the direction of the paper trick has answered my question.  I don't think I will use the paper trick, but now that I see the threads on the issue, I can take it from here.  Thanks again to all.

Yeah, I use the paper trick. My xenium ice isn't flat on the motherboard, but it is pretty close, and it works fine. smile.gif

something i have used instead of the paper trick that works a lot better and i have not had any problems with my chip since

find a washer that is the same size as the little bit of metel that the screw sits on and cut it in half with some pliers and put both halves on the outer edge where you would have put the paper trick

anyways so the half moon washers are sitting on top of each other and screw it down really tight and that fixed my problem straght away to a single problem since

Im really wondering why no one has made a hybrid adapter.. where you solder in the pinheader portion of the adapter and the D0 point is done via spring wire. Seems like it would be the best of both worlds.

I mean, let's face it. The pinheader is easy. Almost anyone could do it without screwing up, even if they had to desolder with braid. The D0 is a little tougher tho. I think it would be great to supply an adapter like that but probably run the cost up of the chips too much to do it.
