How Hard To Install A Ice Mod Chip?
« on: August 10, 2004, 12:20:00 PM »

im not new to modding but i just picked up a v1.6 and now i wanted to install the ice chip in there.  i have put in the 2.3b solderless in my v1.4 before and i know how small those holes really are.  I wanted honest opinions from people who aren't all the experience in soldering to see how hard it actually is to install in a v1.6.

As you can tell (my sig.)  i have soldered in lights under my jewel and in the controller ports and in the dongles.  Do you think that i would have enough exerience with that to be able to solder this chip in my v1.6?  I really want to give it a shot for experience purposes, plus i dont want to have to pay $130 for an installation fee.

Thanks

Well if you have no experience with modding you picked the wrong Xbox to buy, the 1.6 Xbox requires you to rebuild the LPC bus.

Well you need experience his soldering very small wires.  But I’ve seen some pretty shitty installs but they work.  The real question is are you comfortable doing it

You have a couple options.  First, if you live in the ny area ill install it for you for less than 130.  Second, I made a thread explaining how to do it in detail.

Follow one of the guides

Its harder than doing a regular chip, but once you do one they aren't hard.  I was very nervous when I did one, but it wasn't that hard for me.

15 watt soldering pencil
Flux
Rosin core solder
30 gage wire
Magnifying glass
all could be found in radioshack.

and a steady hand

For the top d0 point, heck yes. It alos helps in checking all your connections

Note: I also recommend the bottom d0 on a 1.6. It looks like the hole was meant for the wire. Fits in there rather nicely

I used a 30 watt iron, no flux, no magnifying glass and used the bottom lframe.  As long as your eyesight is good you shouldnt need a magnifying glass.  Flux helps but I didn't need it.  Most of the bottom points are huge.  There is 1 (or 2 if you follow the alt 3.3v method) pad and the rest are vias.  One via is small, the rest are huge.  The lframe is even bigger.  A 30 awg wire is small enough to fit in the hole and freely move and the via pads are huge.  It isnt that hard.

I've actually done it. Its relatively easy, to be honest. The technique that was aquired is a nice touch on the soldering end of things.

Xbox Pictures

Note, the bad soldering. grr.gif

That's ok. I purchased a second Xbox a couple days ago, and I'm going to try it again.

Version 1.6 vs. 1.0 controllers?

I purchased an Xbox over the weekend for $99 + tax (and free Madden 2004 NFL), and its a version 1.0 (haven't cranked open the case yet).

The controller is HUGE compared to the one I have with my v.1.6.

Anyone else noticed this between revisions?

The new controllers are called "Controller S"... I guess the S stands for "small" wink.gif

They've been around for quite awhile and were first introduced in the Japanese market I believe... personally I can't stand the original Giant Controllers smile.gif
