Xenium Chip Is Dead.
« on: July 10, 2004, 10:29:00 AM »

Basic stuff: Running a Xenium with OS v1.1, solderless install into a v1.3 Xbox.

I moved my Xbox over to my friend's house and had it sitting at an odd angle. When I booted it up, I get error 05 (unlocked HDD) and it boots with MS BIOS. My chip just sits there, no LED or anything. It seems that my Xbox is simply bypassing my chip. I've tried reinstalling it to no avail, and I don't have the mad skillz necessary to solder anything.

Any ideas?

Edit: You sure the d0 is in the right place and sitting their properly? And is the adapter screwed down so everything is nice and toight?

Made 100% sure; with the d0 in the wrong place, it wouldn't even boot, and everything's really snug. I made sure of that when I reinstalled the chip.

I've switched my chip on backward, booted a few times, switched it back forward, and it booted properly. My connectors on my solderless were a little bent up, but they straightened out when I stuck my chip oin backward; whatever the problem was, it's fixed now. I'm going to boot it a few times, news in a few minutes.

Edit: Mmk, the chip was loose on the connectors. I tested this by removing my assemblies and turning my Xbox down; it booted MS. I next applied pressure to the chip (not d0; that was still pretty secure), lifted my finger and hit the power; it booted Xecuter 2. Any ideas on how to better secure my chip to my adapter?

The d0 is really in there, and my chip booted Xecuter 2 until I stuck in the side screws.

Problem: I've never soldered anything in my life. If I do, it's going to be some crappy thing for an electronics class, not something I've invested over $300 in.

go to radio shack.  Get a soldering pen (or fine tiped soldering iron).  pick up some 30Ga. wire, and some thin solder (with flux core if available).

While you're there, also grab a 99 cent perferated circut card with leads.  Should have 144 or so holes on it that you can practice soldering to you're hearts content.

There are a couple of soldering tutorials on this site, or you could pick up a $2 maunal while at radio shack.

As long as you're not randomly stabbing the mobo and holding the soldering iron on it while you watch it melt and burn (takes a few sec befor it really does that), you'll be fine.

Best thing to do if you're really nervous about soldering is to strip about an inch of shielding off the end you're about to solder...heat the wire right above where it enters the mother board...touch the solder to the wire and it will run down into the hole...viola!  no touching your mobo with a soldering iron...just clip the excess off when you're done.

mmk, I've got it working. I just reassembled my Xbox in an upright position. I do, however, intend to get it soldered once I find someone who I know will do it right.

Actually, my dad is a former machinist, and if he can't he certainly knows people who can solder it in easily.
