Successful Install On 1.6 Console!
« Reply #30 on: July 13, 2004, 05:31:00 PM »

Ok my ice came today (ordered yesterday, props to Modwhiz).  I put the pinheader in, rebuilt the lpc to it, soldered the included 2 wire piece to lframe and ground, then it frag'd.  I took it apart, checked all the solder points, put it back together, booted fine, except, I use HDTV adapter, NTSC, and the Xenium OS is in black and white.

Wierd thing is I popped my usb pendrive in, loaded M8-1.6, set autoboot to that, and when I press the On button, it goes to that bios in color.  When I press eject to turn on, I get Xenium OS2 in black and white.

any ideas?

yes, install the pin header and make sure to remove the one pin out of it. It pulls out easily with a pair of pliers.

so.. after all this confusion, one question:

Are there any clear, 100% been tested, positive working and informative manuals or tutorials (preferably really forgiving with knowledge barriers and explaining what some of the shit is?) on installing Xenium Ice on a v1.6?

Follow the OZXodus Tutorial on installing a Xenium on a 1.6. Follow it JUST like it says. Don't worry about what we are saying here because some of it is about the blue Xenium chip and you don't have that. It seems that the ICE version and the regular blue Xenium have a significant difference other than just the color.  ohmy.gif

The OzXodus 1.6 manual offers a choice of 2 different methods of LPC rebuild.  One method involves working on the top of the motherboard, while the other involves working on the bottom of the moterboard.  You DO NOT need to do both.

If you're gonna go through the hassle of the LPC rebuild, then there's really no good reason to use the solderless adaptor.

is the SMARTXX chip the EXACT SAME diagram for installing an ICE??

now i know i have to solder the D0 to the chip on my ICE and 1.6...

what im not understanding, is there 2 spots that i can get the D0? one from the TOP and one from the BOTTOM??

cause it seems that the BOTTOM of the board is MUCH easy to see and not mess up then the top?

can i just get the D0 from the bottom and run it thru a hole and solder to the chip?

i mean the LFRAME on the bottom of the board using the SMARTXX diagram to the D0 on the chip?

cause the Xenium diagram shows to get the D0 from the top of the motherboard to the chip... but i dont wanna do it that way...

I don't know if that will work.  Do the LPC rebuild on the bottom of the board like in the Xenium ICE 1.6 install manual, and use the LFRAME on the top as in that same manual.  The LFRAME on top was easy, much easier than the LPC rebuild.  The included wire (blue and black with a plug) makes it easy.  Stick the blue wire in the d0, warm it up with your soldering iron, it's already tinned and will just stick.  Then solder the black one to the screw-hole next to the ICE, and plug the end in to the ICE.

FYI, the LPC rebuild would be easy too if I had some Kynar 30awg precut and tinned, I think modchip sellers should include that or charge like $5 for it.  I used IDE wire and it was a bit trickier...

On that last question about the 3.3v they both work. You can do either method.

There still seem to be questions about the install.. so.. let me lay out the Normal Xenium questions that I have (and will answer later on tonight).

Normal Xenium:
1. Do you need to install the top side D0 like the Ice version? (I believe "No")

2. If you use the plug-in D0/Ground wire that comes with the chip do you still need to ground the LFrame since your grounding the D0 point to ground on top? And will that give you TSOP capability?

Those are questions I can and will answer myself tonight when I get home.

Xenium Ice:
Ummm, really can't think of any Ice questions, I think they have been covered. The only thing "extra" that needs to be done on the Ice chips is to solder the LFrame point to the D0 point on the chip instead of grounding it (running the wire through an open LPC hole). Other than that, just follow the Xodus instructions completely.

Chip installs towards to left side of the Xbox case on the Pin headers. Yes it can be installs wrong/backwards. So make sure the pin header on the modchip is on the right side of the chip when flipped upside down.

biggrin.gif('Course, I had some nice Kynar wire I got at radio shack for $3 (50ft, wirewrapping wire or w/e).

As for the differences in Blue/ICE Xeniums, I'm one to believe it's all software (XOS2 beta vs XOS2 pre-release). AFAICT the Hardware is exactly the same (Of course, until Xenium releases XOS2 for download or someone manages to make/distribute a .bin for the OS from an ICE, we'llnever know...)
