Troubleshooting Xenium New Solderless Adapter

Another solderless adapter workaround of the MrShush variety.

I've found that a cube of styrophone works quite well as a brace on top of the chip/below the dvd to add some pressure (cut from the xbox packaging no less!).

I had the problem where xenium would only boot properly if I put some weight on the chip simultaneously to make the connectors touch.  The chip light would go red and the OOB xbox console would boot.  I placed my styrophone cube on top of the southern edge of the xenium ice (the side with the LPC points closest to the front of the console).

Next, I put a piece of scotch-tape on top of the styrofoam, so it would automatically stick to the dvd drive once it sat on top.  This way you don't have to worry about proper placement it will just happen naturally when you put the drive in on top, and it should stay that way.

It's working like a charm.  I've flipped the box around putting all the screws back and it still boots xenium fine.  Styrofoam seems good because a) it's not a conductor, and b ) it's rigid enough with just enough give so you have steady pressure but don't crush the hell out of the ice chip, and c) you can wittle it down gradually to the proper size without much effort.

Hope it helps.  I almost said eff this and got my soldering on before having the styrofoam vision in my sleep last night.

Hey Guys/Gals

This is my first post but I have been reading the forums for over a month now.  I think I found a permanent solution to the solderless adapter.  After trying all the suggestion on this thread and others I decided to look around at other chips and maybe returning my Xenium.  Anyways, as I was looking at the Xecuter chips I came across this troubleshooting guide for the Xapter.  I tried it on the Xenium solderless adapter and it has worked.  I know longer get frags, or any of that other stuff.  Hope this helps people out.  It sure helped me.  Here is the link to the troubleshooting guide

Thanks marksu for the info.

I have been running a Ice-mod since they came out without any problems (solderless install) until this week.
Games would freeze. The Xbox would reboot into the M$ dash (with the red LED).
I used both the paper trick and I cleaned and tested D0 and now it works great.
Just thought I would let you know since you asked for replies.

oh and if it does return again I will just solder it (a much easier job than my PS2). biggrin.gif

Troubleshooting Xenium New Solderless Adapter

I still can't get my solderless Xenium to work. I have tried all the possible fixes listed here and still nothing. I don't get any led light at all. I had to do the paper trick and it seems as though the adapter is as flush and aligned as possible. When I turn on the xbox it boots to the flubber splash screen, and if I insert a disc it plays it fine. However, when I booted the xbox with the dvd drive and hard drive disconnected, I got the flashing green and red on the eject button and a message on screen in about five different languages that my xbox needed service. But still no led's on the mod chip. I'm at my wits end here. Am I just that innept at installing this chip, or could it be a bad chip? Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Alas too late. This fault on the connector has ended me with a burred screw hole in the case. Unless I take to glueing the screw in, I have to go a solder connection.

You may want to consider sucking the solder out of the holes (assuming it really is a V1.0).

It will be difficult to get to pogo pins to stay in contact with the holes being flush to the board.

Or, as others have suggested, you may want to take the plunge and solder it.

I agree with ltoolio. I'm working on a friends 1.0 and I used the desoldering braid to remove the solder before doing a pinheader install.  It does take a while but its pretty easy to remove   The problem you will run into with the solderless install is the solder on the LPC pin holes are all  slightly uneven which will make it difficult to get your 2x6 male pin header to attach evenly on top of the LPC soldered holes, and even if you do make a connection they will eventually come loose and it won't take to much shaking for this to happen.

THANK YOU!!  This is my first time modding an Xbox and between the walkthrough posted by CAP69 and this trouble shooting guide, My Xenium Ice chip looks to be working great.  I was getting the red LED on my chip when the xbox booted up and the machine would boot to the default dashboard.  I never lost the red LED.  I opened the box back up and re-cleaned the LPC points on both the solderless adaptor and the mobo, as well the the D0 point on the mobo and conector hook.  Reassembled the whole  thing and tried again.  SUCCESS!! biggrin.gif   looks as if the cleaning did in fact work.  Thank You!   Oh yeah, working with a V 1.0 machine.

I also noticed that the end, away from the screw, of the solderless adaptor had a little play, up and down, on the board. I have the black adaptor.  It appears that the little play that was there has no affect on the opperation of the chip.  I hope!!  blink.gif

But thak you again for this thread, without it I would be sitting here steeming!!

Well so much for the up and down play not being a factor.  The chip would work for an entire play session, but when i turned the machine on the next day the chip would red light again.  I placed a piece of folded electrical tape under the screw end of the adaptor  and have had no problems since!!  beerchug.gif

Thanks again!
