Few Questions From A N00b
« on: May 06, 2004, 10:48:00 AM »

After Xenium install, flash first the OS 1.1 before flashing bios.

1. How do I install a new bios on the Xenium? Do I have to use FTP or can it be burned to a CD?

First bios flash must be done through CD cause can't run unsigned code before first bios flash.

2. What is the recommended bios to use? (or best)

Evox and x2 are both good.
x2 have a disable live option which is nice though.
Preventing user from accidently connection to Live when having Xenium enabled.
(diabling xenium is done simply just starting Original Bios through Xenium)

4. Can I install the mod-chip first, followed by a bios, then add the HDD later?
(next week). Is there any disadvantage to doing the above?

No problem, you can install the new HDD later if you want.
One thing thour if you install the dash on old HD it need to be installed also on new one. Maybe easiest it is to get to konow the modding first without new HD hasle.

EDIT: Removed answare of question 3. Better someone else answares that one.

In reply to question #3, it would be best to set up the modchip, get it running and flashed with OS v1.1. Second, install the HDD after the modchip and OS 1.1 is working 100%. Then, you can either use Slayers to install Evo-X dash or do it manually with one of the great EvoX tutorials. Evo-X is the easiest to install and learn with. After you understand how the modchip, HDD, and dashboard all work together, then you can change to Avalaunch or any dash of your choice. Avalaunch is a great dash. But it has many options that can be confusing if it is your very first custom dash. It's better, IMO, to start with a simple one like EvoX, get it working, learn how to do simple tasks like change menu items, etc., and then install the more complex dash like Avalaunch later.  You'll understand more about what you're doing and how to do it.

Download THIS FILE archive (rar), extract the update ISO file from the rar, and burn it to a disc as an image (not as data file). Put the disc in the Xbox, and then in Xenium-OS 1.0 go to Configuration, Recovery Mode.  The Xenium should then look at the CD, get the OS file, flash it, and restart your xbox. If your xbox doesn't restart after five minutes, manually restart it. Remove the disk, and you're done.

If you are getting a new HD then there is no real point in installing a new dash on the stock HD.  I personally would leave it in the stock state in case something bad happens to your new HD or your modchip.

Of course, if you do decide to go ahead and install a new dashboard (I prefer Avalaunch but Evolution is good as well) then you should be able to duplicate your HD within the Xenium BIOS.  Not sure how to create your F: partition however as your stock HD doesn't have one.

if You really want to play with your modchip in the meantime. You could stop and make yourself and evox boot CD. somthing with FTP set up on it. then use the backup eprom feature OF evox (not the Xenium) so that it makes a copy of your eprom on your factory c drive. (this way you always have a copy of it).

gamesaves are on E:

X:, Y:, and Z: are used as cache areas. On other computer systems this is called "virtual memory" or "swap space" or "scratchpad" ... same idea. The games write certain content to these areas to keep from having to constantle re-read it from the DVD (because it's slower access than the hard disk).

Just wanted to pop back in to thank those who replied.

My Xbox is now running XBMC as the default dash and everything is working nicely. I am very impressed with the amount of things my xbox can now do, and do very well. I started out with firefsckers install disk and as soon as I figured out the file structure I replaced the dash and customised to my liking.

MP3 streaming from my shares and a TV interface for viewing images, video and launching apps is excellent.

I look forward to refining and learning more about my new toy.

One quick question, I am running the latest Xecuter bios and I cant seem to find the sequence needed for in game reset, could someone help me with this?

Thanks guys!
