Just wondering why everyone gets sooo excited about bios sizing, so I made this poll.  I only ever use one bios bank, so the Smart XX's 2MB memory seems pointless to me.

Excuse the english (I am english, I'm just tired!)

Jon

the smartxx has 3.5megs of flashable space.

I just use 2 512kb banks right now, one for evox one for avalaunch.

we're quite confident that you'll never have to worry about flash space again!

Does anyone know what the xenium team is up to with the new OS, and how the heck this advanced technology will allow you more bios room?  Are they talking about some extra flash room that you'd have to plug into the extra port on the chip?  Or something else, like accessing bioses stored on the HDD.

If they were stored on the HDD, i assume it could just be some kinda "flash on the fly" thing, where most of the bioses you could use would be stored on the harddrive, then if you picked a bios from the main menu that was on the harddrive, it would instantly flash it to a space on the chip and run it?  If they did soemthing like this, it could indeed allow an infinite amount of space for bioses, but there would be a couple second delay everytime you tried to run a bios that was at the time stored on the HDD.

But this would essentially be doing the same thing the xenium can already do, access bioses from the harddrive to flash, but it would just do it automatically for you.  From the way they're talking I think its gotta be more advanced than this.

Haha, OzXodus is just going to tell all Xenium owners to get PBL and never worry about BIOS size again.

Yup, that's one of the very FEW advantages SmartXX has over Xenium!  wink.gif

Well, I have a 256k bios resized to 512 and halo works fine.  So I guess your saying if the original size of the bios is over 256 then halo won't run?  Why not?

only 256k of your 512k is shadowed into ram, and halo needs all the memory it can get.

I doubt there will ever be an Xbox BIOS that needs to be larger than 512KB (without becoming bloatware).

It's all marketing; 2-4MB flash chips are not much more expensive than 256KB-1MB, so the modchip manufacturers are using them and listing these large bank sizes as a feature.

I personally use a X2.0 Lite chip with 2x512KB, but I never use the second bank, just my single 256KB BIOS (doubled).  And I save my customers money by using inexpensive chips with one 256KB bank like the Aladdin Advance, since that is all they will need.
