made a v 1.1 disk, put it in. When I select recover mode, it reads the disk then say HALT! and then the eject button turns solid red.

sounds like it can't find a file somehow.  
try uploading the file to your f:\ drive instead.  look at the manual for specific location and name.

UPLOAD TO THE E: partition, NOT F:

Didnt "beef up" the cd enough. I learned that used cd-rws that are erased can be used for the update. (at least memorex cd-rws with a samsung dvd drive)
