Smart Drive Upgrade And Configmagic
« on: March 03, 2004, 08:07:00 AM »

Ok...so I got my Xenium in installed O.S. 1.1 and that's all good and fine......

Well, I booted Avalaunch and then I ftp'd into it and installed configmagic...
I thought hey, what the hell...so I unlocked my HDD and locked it again(it's stock 8 gig).

I am still a noob when it comes to keys and all that....so, what I am wondering is....what is the HDD key...what does the eeprom have to do with the hard-drive...and will I be able to unlock my stock hard drive to to do a Smart Drive upgrade...I need some help quick because I have an 80 gig maxtor next to me that needs to be installed..and locked(Xblive is my fun)....

And what should I do with my bios with this new HDD(I see xbtool came out with a new embedded eeprom thing and embedded H.D. key?) I am really confused with all this could someone help me out here?

1) What is the HDD key?
When you used ConfigMagic the numeric Key is displayed for you.
When using ConfigMagic a secondary universal key is also put in place:
TEAMASSEMBLY

2) What does the eeprom have to do with the hard-drive?
The eeprom, which is unique to your xbox, is used to generate a unique HD key.

3) Will I be able to unlock my stock hard drive to do a Smart Drive upgrade?
I don’t see why not.

I don’t know anything about the Smart Drive upgrade.
Anyone Else?

4) What should I do with my bios with this new HDD?
Not sure what you mean.
The Bios is stored on the ModChip which can be upgraded via CDR/DVDR or HDD

For someone just starting out don’t mess with the eeprom thing in Xbtool.
If you do please read the NFO very carefully.
Everything is explained very well.

The Embedded Epprom cannot be used for !Live as it requires the ModChip to be active.

However, it can be used to try and spoof your Eeprom information in memory
(using a different eeprom.bin than your original Xbox's)
incase M$ tries to discover your Xbox with Modchip active.
Although if using X2's !Live fixed BIOS’s should prevent that from ever happening.

It can also be helpful for folks who have corrupted Eeproms and cannot get their xbox's to boot.

This could also be used to recover information from locked Xbox Hard drives.
All you need is a good backup of the eeprom.bin from the Xbox HD's original motherboard.
In theory you can unlock any locked HD in any Xbox with
the correct eeprom information imbedded in the bios image.

Thank you very much, you answered my question beyond whatI needed....

My last question is, will I be able to unlock my Stock drive in my box using the Xenium's Drive options? Will it be able to view my eeprom's data in order to  calculate the H.D. key as TEAMASSEMBLY?

Thank you for your time...

To test this:
I unlocked and then locked the xbox hard drive with Configmagic.
Rebooted with original bios and successfully launched the M$ dashboard.

Then
I unlocked and then locked the xbox hard drive with the Xenium.
Rebooted with original bios and successfully launched the M$ dashboard.

I repeat both steps three times to confirm the results.

I did not use a stock drive to test.
I can test with a stock drive a little while from now.
I highly doubt there would be any difference but you never know.
Just make sure you make a good back up of the HardDrive first
and you should have little worries.

With ConfigMagic you get two passwords.
The basic 40 character HD key plus the Master TEAMASSEMBLY password.
Both *should* unlock the HD.

I can only assume the Xenium uses only the basic 40 character HD.
And doesn’t put any kind of emergency PWD in place like ConfigMagic.

Whether or not the ConfigMagic master PWD is still in place after using
the Xenium utility is unknown to me.

Anyone else with Smart Drive Experience please respond.

I wonder if the H.D. password (in new Maxtor 120 gig) can be calculated from reading eeprom information.?  This is why I am wondering if Xenium will be able to calculate all of this ..

In fact this test was performed on a Maxtor 120 gig drive.

New retail drives always come unlocked.
Again the HD key is generated using information located in the Xbox's eeprom.

Just to be clear the test proved this:
An Xbox HD locked with ConfigMagic can be Unlocked with the Xenium Disk Utility.
An Xbox HD locked with Xenium Disk Utility can be Unlocked with ConfigMagic.
And vise versa.
