When you say he 'broke it' is there any chance he damaged the cat-5 cable (ethernet cable)
Maybe streached the cable... tried a new cable??

Also have you check your soldering to make sure you've not got any bleeding???
If only you'd installed through the pinheader you wouldn't of needed to resolder then... unless you 'mate' did some serious damage
