Header Pin Install
« on: February 24, 2004, 06:30:00 PM »

Attempted our first header pin install tonight.  All seemed to go well, but the Xbox just boots right to MS Dash.  No frag or anything.

Seems to me that implies a bad d0.  Went to the underside d0, and all looks well.

No LEDS at all on the chip when powered on.

So, how do I troubleshoot.  If the d0 is good but the chip has no power would it still boot to MS, or would it frag?

Also, does someone have a pinout for each pin on the pin header, so I can test power?

So, does the fact that it boots right to MS mean d0 is bad?

I know we have an issue with the pin header, but it sure looks like our d0 is good.  Any help would be appreciated....

Sorry all (thanks LIP)

It's a V1.0 mobo, we desoldered the holes.  We know we have a pinheader issue (not all pins are good), but still wondering why it would boot msdash if d0 is good, which we've checked again.

So, anyone with the pin layouts so I can use a multimeter to test each pin, and also, does this still point to a bad d0?

As far as I know if the chip has power it lights red.
If the d0 is fuzored then the chip lights red but the Retail bios just loads

hmm...I had the same problem, but I fuond, that ieven if you have your chip on the pins, and have some sort of connection, even if it is a bad one, then you box will frag, and another thing, if you have no connection(hence 1.5) then even if your d0 is connected there wil be no frag...

Ok, resoldered pin header, and now we get red light on the chip, on-off-on-off-frag on the Xbox.

Double checked for splashes, and loose pins, etc.

Used a multimeter to check ALL pin voltages and ground.  All pins are within spec (+/- 5%)

The install looks real good, just not sure why the frag.

We do not have it hooked up to a TV, but should not get video if it frags, right?  (we do have a video cord hooked into it, if that matters).

From all I've read it says to recheck all points.  We are doing that now.

Would the pins all check out with proper voltage/ground if we had a bad solder job?

had a splash between the two rows of header pins.  Make sure you check those carefully.  Even tho we checked over and over again, we missed this one.

Chip now boots.  Thanks OzXodus.

Now have to prepare some Bioses for this wonderful chip......

Thanks all for the help
