Warning For Those Considering A Wire Install

As in another post of mine, I wanted to avoid soldering my chip directly onto the Motherboard so I used wires to connect the quicksolder points to the LPC.  (v1.0 box and I have no good solder-removing tool to do pinheader).

I did it all carefully and verified all connections including ground and d0 with a multimeter, but the box fragged.

I double checked all connections and still no luck.

I then removed all the wires, and just did the quicksolder right onto the motherboard, not really expecting any difference, but low and behold, it worked!

The Xenium must be very sensitive to timing or require a certain quality of wire - I used an old IDE cable which I've used successfully to do mods in the past.  Note I still have a strand of IDE cable on the d0, that seems to be fine.

So if you want to do a wire install, ensure you have very good quality wire, and don't make them too long.

I bet all it was that you had the wires for the install far too long, ive seen this loads of times with other chips. Someone tries to do a wire install but they use far too much wire and the xbox FRAGs, the wires are then shortened and everything works fine.

If you're doing a wire install you dont want to use anything longer than about 3 inches of wire at most i would suggest.

Yeah, I learned the hard way.  It just doesn't make sense to me that wire length would make a difference, at least on the data lines, since IDE cables are capable of very fast IO - I suppose it could create an unclean power source to the chip since IDE cables aren't meant to carry power, but since the LPC 3.3v points are clean and have impedence to ground I thought I could get away with it.
