Soldering The D0 . . . Larger D0 On Bottom Of Mb?
« on: January 23, 2004, 11:37:00 PM »

That d0 point is TINY - I haven't taken my mobo off yet but I will, to do the pin header.  I read a while ago (lost the link) that there is a larger d0 point on the back of the mobo, and you don't have to prep it as you do the one on the top as it is  not covered by the lacquer finish - any truth to that?  You could run the wire through the empty LPC hole from the removed pin to the chip -

I've done a solderless install but this is my first solder install - I want to get it right!

where is the d0 on the back. It looks like a chip is blocking the back of the front d0. Is there a pic i can look at or a diagram?

If you have an earlier version xbox, there may be 8 pads instead of 7 in that line, but it is still the 3rd pad from the end shown below.

What is the D0 exactly?? Is this the power for the chip?

Also I have a Version 1.0 xbox.  If I wait and go for the solderless install when it comes out do I still have to solder the D0??

And if I do have to solder the D0 I might as well just do a pin header,  in my V1.0 xbox do i have to remove the solder from the LPC holes first?  If its there?

I have to ask in addition to my other questions above.  what the hell is a wet soldering iron??  And how is it different from a regular soldering iron?

just do what mackinaw said. get a small enough gauge wire, so that it can fit in the hole. then with you soldering iron in one hand get a glob of solder on the tip. with your other hand stick the end of the wire i nthe glob. do all this very close to the d0 point. after you stick the wire in the solder, carefully and quickly stick it in the hole. it can be done and may take a couple tries, cause you gotta be quick. it is also a good i dea to lightly scrape out the d0 point.

Don't forget to use the Flux.  Here are some of the things I picked up at RadioShack that helped me out...

Item                                   Part No.
Rosin Soldering Flux           64-021
Tip Tinner                           64-020D
Rosin-Core Solder .032      64-017E
Desoldering Braid               64-2090  (good to have just to clean up splashes
Soldering Iron                    64-2051B

I would suggest you practice on an old NIC card or a old Video card.  Once your comfortable with that you should be good-to-go with the actual soldering on the X-box...

Good luck and Semper Fi
