I'm trying to flash my X2.3 lite with cromwell flashbios. It finds the bios.bin file on the cd, but then immediately says "unknown flash! halting". Anyone know how to get around this?

2. what size biso are you tring to use

3. what type of madia are you using

Burnt it with nero (No Multisession, ISO Level 1, Format Mode 1, ISO 9660, Deselect Joliet, Finalize CD, Disc-At-Once)

Used XB2M to make a one meg bin file out of the X2 4979.06.

I tried a DVD-R and a DVD+RW, same error... I have a Thomson drive.

version 1 xbox

Did you put a dummy file in the ISO?

When you saved the ISO you made with XB2M what did you name it?

The last thing If I were you I would only make the BISO's 512k and leve blanke 2 with cromwell on it so if you had a bad flash on blank 1 or you what to update the BISO's latter you could do it with another flash cd.

Yup, there's a 500 meg dummy file 'dummy.bin' on the disc.  Also tried it with two dummy files, one aaa.zip and one zzz.zip.

bios file's name is 'BIOS.BIN'

just tried it with a 512k bios.bin file... same error.

Finds the bios file, then says "unknown flash! halting" on the next line.

Your dummy file only needs to be about 50kb
Right now you dummy file is bigger the you BISO's

Take a look at this
Flashing x2.2 and x2.3 (pro or lite) with FLASHBIOS

You need to get this:
Dummy File Creator

Makes it a lot easier.

Ok, I made a smaller dummy file, and it still isn't working.  Agh, this is frustrating.

I just read that the "Unknown flash! Halting" error means that the chip is write protected... I have it on unprotected, but still gives me that error. Also, found a suggestion that says to unplug the external switch after cromwell boots up to turn off write-protection. That doesn't work either.

Is it possible that my write-protect switch doesn't work? If so, anyway to fix it (ie, pull the switch off and just solder a connection so it is unprotected then break the connection later to protect it again?)

Also tried to reflash it with cromwell 2.26... that doesn't work either, same error.

I'm having the same problem.  It sees the BIOS.BIN, and sees that it's a 512k bios, and then halts with the "unknown flash" error.  I did some prelim continuity testing of the switch, and I think the unprotect switch is electrically working.

Dunno wtf is wrong. :/

It is most certainly your Thompson DVD Drive.  I'm almost positive.  I had the same problem.  Luckily I know people who own a pawn shop, and they let me switch drives with a Phillips.  It worked perfectly!!!  But I suggest you flash it through LPT.

I flashed my 2.3 with a memorex CD-RW.  On the cd was a 200meg dummy file and a 512k version of the 4979.67.  It flashed rightaway.  Oh, btw I have a Thompson drive!

I don't think it is the thomson drive because I've also tried hotflashing it through evox and using flash-X. Both of those give "Flash Not Writeable" errors.

Could have a defective chip... ???

I mean, if you can't hotflash it... I'd contact the vendor... Where'd you get it?
