Try adding Config Magic Final as an app and run that and see if you can lock it, be VERY CARFUL with that app though, it can do SERIOUSE damage if you don't know what your doing in it.

You can run it on CDRW if you rename the xbe to default.xbe I think, and that you have a hacked bios on your mod chip (such as X2 4981.06).

most if not all 300gig hard drives wont lock but even if it wont lock you should still be able to copy files over aslong as you setup the drive right you just wont be able to turn the modchip off without a frag

if its a eeprom and hard drive match problem then the drive must be locked already and your find the smartxx os will still work as thats based on cromwell but the hdd tools wont then if you try and boot a hacked bios like x2 it will frag

there are  loads of ways to fix a bad eeprom like flashing a hacked bios with the eeprom key inside if that is the problem you have aslong as you have the key for the hdd it can be fixed easy

where can i get an eeprom hacked bios to flash my chip?

they used to sell them in the BST section of these forums but i dont think that will solve your problem from what i can gather you cant ftp your new hdd and you cant lock it

1) have you got a BIOS on your smartxx modchip?
2) when you try to lock the hdd are you using the smartxx OS menu option? (config magic isnt needed)
3) is this the original xbox hdd or a new one?

if you can answer these questions i can help you further! dont worry about the eeprom ok!

when i boot the x2 bios i see the special animation, but then it just stops at the xbox logo. i don't think i have any files on the drive to make it boot correcty.
