Duox 2 Lite Problem
« on: December 31, 2008, 10:55:00 AM »

You need to resolder all the LPC connections . make sure the solder has flowed correctly. If the D0 is dodgy resolder it as well.
Don't be afraid to use a higher wattage iron to do the soldering.
most people use a 15 watt one believing low wattage is the best and it is not the case (unless the iron is a high quality brand) The solder should flow within 2 seconds of applying the iron to the joint. If it doesn't pool and flow then the iron is not hot enough.
The type of issue you are having is nearly always down to the soldering.

i'd also recommend using the bottom side D0.
it's a much easier connection to make, although it doesn't sound like your problem here.

listen to chancer.
reflow, check connectivity. try again.

i use a temperature adjustable soldering iron at ~335c.
that always seems to do the trick.

oddly enough, this kinda seems like a DVD drive problem. swap the DVD drive into another xbox if you can. see if you get similar results. does it do this on the retail bios also? it sounds like it's trying to read a ghost disc.

if it's not the DVD drive, another thing you can try is to jump BT to the chip, not the eject board.
here is a pinout, jump BT to the X, and see what happens. 1's are pins, 0's are spaces.

CODE
      101111
(BT)  1001X1  (D0)

you're not supposed to leave the BT open,
and i know chancer is gonna flame me for this,
but if all else fails,
just unhook the BT from everything and leave it open...just to see if there's a change in behaviour.
don't leave it like that though, or you'll have problems...maybe even an angry brit knocking down your front door... jester.gif

i gotta say, this really sounds like it's coming from the DVD drive.
if you don't hit the button, it loads M$ dash, correct?
that's because it's finished trying to read the DVD medium, and has decided to boot from the HD.
the freeze at the splash screen is most likely your xbox...
  • waiting for you to shut the DVD tray that's already shut
  • waiting for the imaginary disc to load
  • going slope-faced when it looks for a dash
  • freaking out negotiating a data stream with the DVD drive (but not enough to error code).
also, i know this sounds stupid, but also verify that BT is hooked up to the correct pin on the eject board.

BT floating  muhaha.gif  muhaha.gif  biggrin.gif

Did you reflow the LPC pins? (most likely cause)
Do you have any pics of the work.
Presumably the box worked before you installed the chip so it is something related to what you have done.
I doubt the DVD drive would fail between being a working unit and soldering in a chip.

The issue you had usually occurs with the 1.1. Certain Duo chips had a problem with sinking D0 enough to enable the chip. The way to tell was simply to ground motherboard D0 point as well as linking Pin 9 to BT.

grounding BT and connecting it to Pin 9 serves the same purpose it makes the chip always on. Chancer has a good tutorial on the install of the Doux2 chips the tutorial will show where pin 9 is.

And what did you mean you you just pushed the chip onto the pinheader

First of all, what I meant by pinheader is the thing in the left side of this pic: http://xbox.x-pec.co...es/DSC00004.jpg

I soldered that to the motherboard.  Then I just slid the chip on top of it without soldering because the chip has holes in it, and it just slides right on

yes those are the female header socket. It receives the LPC signals through the male LPC pin you soldered to the LPC region of your motherboard.

Now the DuoX chip won't even boot.  If I hit eject it will go into the retail BIOS just fine, but if i use the power button, I get no video, and the box just turns on and off an on and off by itself

Cold boot the xbox with either slayers or aid in the drive and with the modchip on see if it will boot them without freezing. If it boots either or those then your problem may be that you have the dash installed in the wrong location.

i still think you need to try a different DVD drive (if you have one handy). i had this happen with a DVD drive that always registered a disc present, even when there was no disc. i keeps trying to read the disc until you hit eject, then it gives up.

you could also try swaping your ribbon cable and yellow DVD dongle, but that's kind of a long shot.

if you get it to boot off a good DVD drive, then you can boot to a slayer's disc and build your HD.

Take a high res picture of the LPC soldering and post it here. Underneath the board. forget everything else until we can see that this part is perfect.
This was so common it is unbelievable a few years ago.

The days of xbox modding are pretty much gone. I'm glad I was able to take part. Hehe. It was very enjoyable.  I liked it alot...thanks to you Chancer. You provided much insight.

Yeah I realize that modding an xbox is no longer what's hot in the streets.  I just need to be able to install a new hard drive because the factory one went kaputz so that's why I'm chipping.

Here are the pics

You can't do it like that! The female header socket can't be solder to the motherboard. The pins are too short. There's your problem. You have it reversed. The part that you soldered ot the chip needs to be in the motherboard. But given you're able to boot once in a while was surprising to me. Anyways if you want to just leave it like that.....then fix up the soldering a bid on the underside of the mother board.

We're not saying something bad about you wanting to explore....just that it was a common source of problems back in the day of xbox modding. Hey we were all noobs at one time or another. You will learn from this experience that's all.
