My Mod Seems To Act Funny
« on: January 22, 2008, 06:24:00 PM »

Ok, so I am not new to xbox-scene as I have used the technical advise found here to mod My xbox.  I have been having the same Issue with the hard mod which reoccurs between 3 and 9 days.  Everything works great. I installed a new HDD, with dash and all other kinds of homebrew software, and everything is still golden.  I can play my games and it powers up fine.

Now... after what i can the "grace" period where it likes me, the box then decides to start fraging.  Ive opened it up twice now looked over everything, and havent really found anything wrong.  I then reflow some of the solder points (same ones each time...  D0, BT, and a few on the MoBo end of the pinheader).  afterwards, I put it all back together and it works great for the "grace" period once again until it decided it doesnt like me any more.

Any ideas why its doin this.
I thought it might be my D0 wire being too small to suppot the necessary current, but I havent found the wire melted at all.  I thought it might be the D0 point, but if i ground the wire then the box frags.  I thought it might be the chip, but if it woks just after a reflow of solder that is most likely the last reason.

Any help would be appeciated.  Props out to all who contributed to Xbox-Scene, the site and forums are awesome souces of needed information.

my fear is that you have a somewhat damaged trace or pad causing sporadic failures in your mod.

have you checked to see if the failure is at all related to your temp readings?

next time it fails, just let it sit until it reaches room temp again, then see if it works again without reflowing your solder.

otherwise, crack it open and start doing continuity tests on your LPC.

also see if you have the same issues when you pull the chip off the LPC.

don't forget to unground the D0 when you do this, otherwise it will keep trying to load the bios from the LPC.

Yea, so i finally fixed the issue...  so, it looks like the soldering gun I had (before i bought my new one) had been used on a few projects by someone who decided that using a metal file on the tip to sharpen it was a smart idea.  The heat output was way below what it was supposed to be, and therefore was not flowing properly.  I bought a new 40 watt iron as my old percision one went missing around the time my brother visited me.
So, to make a long story short, I believe that even though the solder points looked good, and tested good, they were only partial connections, and therefore would if jossled much, loose connection.Z

Thanks
