I ended up redoing the whole thing and got it up and working. Don't know what the problem was but a complete reinstall taking a bit more time took care of the issue that I was having. But now it for some reason the xbox won't turn off with the power button. It needs to be unplugged to turn it off and then when it gets plugged back in the dvd tray ejects. Will load a game when inserted but won't boot to the chip.

Sounds like some damage to the PE board.
