Duo X2 Gs (white Chip) Worked Intermittenly And Now Not At All! He
« on: September 11, 2006, 05:42:00 AM »

hi long time reader, first time poster

ok heres the story

i have a DuoX2 GS it worked fine accept now and then i would have to pop my xbox open and reseat it on the pinheader because it would lose connectivity,

well today i was gaming all day with my friends i get home plug in my xbox to transfer a movie and it boots to ms dash, so i get out my tools and pop open my box, reseat the chip, no go

i know the D0 wire is operational, i know the BT wire is operational so.... whats going on do you think my chip is fried? if so what would be an easy replacement possibly even another brand of chip also would a "soderless" work with my setup or should i just grab another duo to simplify the process

ive tried reseating it 10+ times with no success

also my xbox is a v1.6

also im willing to go chipless for a bit.  how hard is it to softmod a presetup harddisk (300gb) is it as simple as just unlocking the drive on a pc, replacing the dash files on C and locking it  and putting it back in

thanks in advance for any help or opinions

You need to explain the phrase no go.
Just the chipped side or does the box not work retail either?
Does the machine FRAG?
Do you get an error number?
Is there no power at all?
Having to re-seat the chip periodically points to a bad installation so it may be time to check the rebuild and the soldering now.

I would have to say 95% chance it is  the soldering.  Any time a chip works, then intermittent, then not at all is a sign or poor degrading solder joints.

ok so chip = in need of replacement or just some fresh solder?

in the case of in need of replacement
what replacement would be reccomended? the same chip? a better chip?

solder has nothing to do with the chip.  Just desolder everything and resolder it wiht fresh solder, and make sure it is done good this time.  Bad soldering lasts a short time, good soldering last a long time (15+ years)
