Duo X2 Blue Install Questions
« on: August 07, 2006, 09:18:00 PM »

Well just a few questions. I've installed modchips before, and am fairly competent at soldering.
This xbox used to have a modchip /w solderless adapter on it. Which my buddy for some unknown reason took out and gave it a friend. The hard drive is unlocked as well.

The duo x2 blue chip I bought came  preflashed with x2 4981 and evox m8 for v1.6. One bank works for 1.0-1.5 and the other bank works for 1.6.

Followed the instructions on duo x 2 install on fixnchipz.co.uk site.

The xbox frags on startup and gives me 05 error.
I realize the hard is unlocked, thats why the error comes up when booting to ms dash.
The modchip doesn't seem to be loading up at all.

No led flashing on modchip. I linked a wire from bt pad to pin9. Still no change.

Question I have is do I leave the bt connected to rear eject still? Or do I just connect it to pin9? From what I understand pin9 to bt will turn the modchip always on.

From what I can see after reading the various duo threads, tutorials, and faqs, it seems like a bad lpc connection. Soldering job seems fine though.

I could use some suggestions or ideas here.

Hmm after looking at some more pictures of the xbox motherboard and figuring out what each pin on the lpc does. So bt pad on duo goes to pin 9 or bt point on the rear eject board, but not both. This is leading me to think its a prob with the lpc soldernig possibly, that'll have to wait till tomorrow though. One thread mentioned grounding d0 what does that mean and why would I want to do that?

Definitely check your d0 soldering, and definitely check your LPC soldering. If the chip is getting power and d0 has a good connection, it'll at least FRAG with no video.

As for BT, connect it either to pin 9 for always on or connect it to the back of the eject button (power = hacked, eject = retail). Not both though.

Alright thanks for the advice. I'll resolder or touch up all the joints. Think I'll try using diff wire as well. In the past I have used top d0 using enamel covered wire (magnet wire), think i'll try a diff wire and go with the bottom d0 instead. Though I'm fairly sure I tried that. Too late at night now, but I'll dig around for the multitester tomorrow morning heh.

Well started watching mash reruns and did some soldering. Here is what is happening at the moment.

Hitting power button starts off with 2-3 green , then fragging red/green
Hitting eject results in a green flash, then fraggin red/green

No video.

And on bank 0 on duo chip. Still no led on the duo chip.

With modchip removed, video works and loads to ms bios.

So from this here is what I am thinking...

http://www.fixnchipz.co.uk/page12.html

says if eject led flashes red/green that d0 and bt are fine.

Heres my question.
Lpc is still messed up? The lpc seems alright to me, good contact on each point.
How come the led on the modchip shows no signs of life?

The only thing I can think of doing is taking out a working chip out of my own xbox and trying it on this one.
If it works then this duo chip is dead right? If not then its time to buy a desoldering braid.

Any thoughts/comments lemme know.

Definitely check your lpc soldering, and definitely check your soldering on he female header on the chip itself...

Check the 5v, 3.3v and GND lpc lines especially; if yo're not getting a red flashing led, the chip isn't getting power or BT isn't  properly connected.

Well it turns out after a few hours of messing with the dang duo chip, it turned out to be dead, hence no flashing leds, or other things. I did remove both headers and resoldered the female/male solders just to be sure as well, no change. Tried an old matrix chip in it and it worked fine. Dead duo, no idea how long ago I bought it or from who, anyhow just thought I'd post this to recap and finish off this thread.
