If a flashed chip is fragging and the cromwell one does not flash then it is 99 times out of a 100 the soldering of the LPC. One of the pins has a high resistance connections.
Reflow the LPC solder again using a hotter iron.
Also check if flashing via Eurasia that the raincoat.cfg contains the correct flash ID in the first 13 lines, but I doubt it is this if a working chip FRAGs when you fit it in the same xbox

I think you answered you own question.  If you hooked up a known working chip to the xbox and it frags, then your solder work on the LPC is faulty.

cool, glad i tried what i did then.  let me know if this is a good or a bad idea.  completely remove the current header that is on there, clean up all the lpc points and remove any of the older solder there.  clean up the contact points, put a new header on it with new solder and see what happens next.

thanks guys

I wouldn't remove the header. 95% of the time removing the header only leads to more problems than it solves. (Especially if you don't have a lot of soldering experience).

I'd reflow all the solderpoints and make sure you're getting good contact on each one. It's possible you have a lifted LPC ring on one of the lpc holes, in which case you'll need to rebuild it from it's source on the board to the lpc pin.
