Look into the possibility that the drive is stuffed.
M8 skips the clock check. If the box boots the Slayer disc it is skipping the clock check. If it wasn't it you would need the clock set to boot the disc.
I have had a few now where the files appear to copy accross fine but actually don't.
Get hold of AID 3 to make sure there is no problem with your slayers files or boot from Slayers, connect via FTP and check that the files you think are being copied are actually there. Particularly the clock.xip files

Thanks for the reply, you were 100% right, the drive died. I clean off an old 40gb, dropped it in the xbox and everything works perfectly now.
