I recently purchased an Xbox labled as "not working" knowing it was probably fixable. It's a 1.1 with an (I believe unlocked) 80 gb hd in it. So anyways, it has a DuoX 2 (lite?) and when I boot, it flashes red ( I guess that's normal) but it suddenly boots error code 5. So, what can I do in ths situaiton? Error code 5 means the hard drive is unlocked, right? Which shouldn't be an issue with a chip. I have checked the solder points and they're solid. I hate to soundlike a noob, but this is my first hard mod (done like 8 soft). Ask for any more info that I may have forgot. Thanks in advance.

error code 5 sounds like it still has the retail bios booting. When the Xbox logo comes up, does it just say the regular "MS" below, just before giving your error code 5?

The D0 point is not making connection on the Xbox Motherboard . BT should be working as the chip LED flashes. failure to boot the chips bios is usually the D0.
the error 5 will not be present once the chip boots correctly.
If ya want to check it. solder Xbox D0 to ground and boot with the power button to enable the chip.
If it boots retail and error 5 its the D0

Thanks, I'll chech it when I get home. Although, I looked at the D0 solder point and it seemed fine. Would the same thing occure if nothing were flashed on the chip? I'm not sure of the current BIOS on the chip since I'm a second owner. ( he probibly left it default) The guy that sold it to me said that he just "fiddled" with the chip a bit. Yeah, the boot screen is the default MS one. So, I should solder the xbox D0 point to the Xbox ground or the ground on the DuoX2? Thanks again for your help guys.

Solder D0(D0 on Mobo not D0 on chip) to ground on the Xbox (metal around the screw holes). So if you are getting the normal MS logo then either the mod chip is not loading, and as Chancer said it is a D0 issue, or the guy installed the MS bios on the mod chip which I am be about 99% sure the guy wouldn't do that.
So first resolder the D0 from the appropriate spot on the Mobo to d0 on the chip to see if that works, if it doesn't then solder it to ground (that makes the chip always on).
Make sure the guy has D0 soldered to the right spot on the board. Cause he might have a good solder joint, but on the wrong spot.

Hm, no success yet, I've re-soldered the D0 point (even though it was right). I did the Xbox D0 to ground, but that began to boot, then shutdown right away, like it short circuited. I tried the "always on solder points, but that just makes the Xbox reboot upon shutdown. Any more suggestions? Remember, this is not a new chip, he may have damaged it. If the D0 just doesn't work right from the Xbox is there an alternative point? Thanks.

THere is the topside and bottom side d0 you can use on a 1.1. So try both. It sounds like it is probably your soldering. Just saying that because before it boot but with the chip enabled, now with the chip enabled it is messing up. Unless you damaged something, it is probably you soldering causing the issue.

Well, I don't know what's going on with it. I know that my soldering is fine. I actually have another coming soon, so hopefully it's just the chip. I already tried the D0 on the top; first off, REALLY hard to get the wire to stay there, and when I did, it did the same thing. Error 5.
Anything else that might help?

Its not the chip.
If you solder Xbox D0 to a ground point on the Xbox motherboard it disables booting from the MS bios and forces the box to try and boot from LPC.
If you want a concrete test. Solder the Xbox D0 point to ground and unplug the chip from the pinheader.
Boot the xbox and the machine will FRAG.
If it comes up error 5 the D0 point is not correctly connected. No other thing it can be.

Thanks for the response. So, I hooked the D0 to the ground, hit the power button, and it turns on then off on then off then on with red/green flashes. No display. That would confirm my D0 soldering then right? I'm going to reattach the chip with the validated D0, probably to give me error 5 again. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) I'll post my results.

That confirms soldering to the D0.
Next step is to turn your attention to BT. Connect BT to pin 9 (point G) on the chip.
This makes the chip always on. Put D0 back on to the chip now.
Try the BT thing and let me know what results it gives
It would be very unusual for the chip to just allow retail boot only. No/Corrupt bios on the chip would give FRAG (same as if no chip on the LPC)
