This is my first post 'ere, so bear with me =)

We have an early v1.0 box which has been through quite a lot. It was first modded by a friend of ours with one of those 29 wire Enigmah monsters, but since then we've cut those wires (not desoldered them), and then modded it with an X-ecuter 2 Lite chip, soldering directly onto the points rather than using them pins. A couple of days ago, we noticed that the fan was starting to sound louder, as if the box was getting close to being overheated. I'm not sure if this has to do with what happens next, but I thought I might as well mention it.

Then, later that day, it wouldn't start. When I press the power button, the LED immediately starts flashing yellow/green, but does not reboot three times as it did when we had soldered one of the LPC points wrong (read: FRAG ; P). The HDD doesn't even begin to spin. Disabling the chip changes nothing, so even without the chip we can't get it to the XBOX splash.

We tried to disconnect all the extra peripherals, thinking it had something to do with them. Since we never got to the 'You need service' screen either, we couldn't base our troubleshooting on what error message we got =)

Disconnecting the DVD, the HDD and that little extra card into which you plug in the controllers changed nothing, but we weren't at that point sure what effect doing this would have. Luckily, we have access to a slightly newer v1.1 box, which is modded with another X-ecuter 2 Lite chip and works perfectly. We disconnected the same things in it and tried to boot it up, and got the 'You need service' screen, with the error message 12 or so (I can't remember the actual number, but when I looked it up earlier today it was the one that meant 'DVD failure'). So, logically, the root of the problem has to lie in something else than those peripherals.

Next we thought of the unused Enigmah wires. Could one of them perhaps be short-circuiting something out? So we unscrewed the board, flipped it over, cut the wires at half their length and wrapped the ends in electrically isolating tape. We flipped it back up and tried again, only to see the same black screen and yellow/green flashing LED.


What's left to try? <=(

The only things I can think of:
1) Some solder point(s) of the Enigmah wires touch something they shouldn't - we only neutralized the outer end of the cables. (I can have a look at that tomorrow)
2) The box got overheated and something was damaged. Does it shut itself down when the temperature is too high (~71 centigrades, right?), *if* it has frozen up and nobody noticed it?
3) Some part was damaged due to something yet unknown.
4) Both the chip BIOS and the standard BIOSes are completely garbled up? We have Lite chips, so I'm not really sure how to reflash if this were to be the case...




Any help/ideas would be greatly appreaciated =)

The yellow/green flashing usually occurs when the xbox is not connected to a TV, the xs tutorial error code says:

ORANGE/GREEN Flashing:
No AUDIO/VIDEO (A/V) pack.
This may also be down to a solder splash on the board or a damaged track.

I suggest you try another video cable, check the video connector etc....

I tried removing the A/V cable from the v1.1 box, and then power it on. Indeed, it did flash yellow/green just as the v1.0 does.

HOWEVER, the HDD and DVD also began spinning, which I haven't been able to get the v1.0 to do yet.

Do you think this could be a sign that yes, it's something with the A/V, but more probably caused by what you called a solder splash than a faulty cable?




OH, yes - I may have forgotten to mention this. When I power the v1.0 box on, and it starts flashing yellow/green, it does this for about 5 seconds, then it powers off.

..while if I power the v1.1 box on without the A/V cable connected, it flashes for eternity until I plug it back in.


I could open the box and look for solder splashes, but I doubt any tracks are damaged, since it stopped working all by itself (as in, not in relation to us opening it up and messing with it. A track shouldn't get damaged by itself in a closed box on the shelf, should it?).

This probably means it's not the AV cable thats causing the problem then.....

I guess it's a hardware fault somewhere, probably not a bios problem.  Perhaps the temperature sensor thinks the box is overheating? (orange flashing = overheat)

Its difficult to find much info about orange flashing on these forums
