The easy way to get the dash on is just use an autoinstaller disc like AID 3.0 or Slayers 2.6(not as up to date)
To back up games you will have to FTP.
If you leave  a new HDD unlocked it will only be useable with the chip on. You can not boot an unlocked drive with the retail bios.

Yes, solder a jumper wire from BT to pin 9 on the chip.

The only way I see the switch working, is if you move the switch that is on the chip to somewhere accessible without opening the xbox. This is the hard way of doing it.
An easier way would be to add a button/link in your evox dash that opens up any other dashboard you want. You can make your xbox start up quicker if you use an xecuter2 5035 bios, and turn of the flubber animation. Its rather easy to do, just change one number in a configuration file that the bios loads at startup.

I would reccommend you leave yourself the option of turning off the modchip. You never know when you might have to have it off. All you need to do is turn on the xbox with the power button anyways to have the chip on. Its not that difficult. But again, its up to you.

Good Luck

i was originally hoping to install a switch to flick between the two dashboards (like a friend of mine has)

If you wire up the chip following the instructions, then turning on with the power button will boot the chip BIOS (and therefore EvoX or whatever dashboard you install), whereas turning on with the eject button will boot the retail BIOS (and therefore the MS dashboard). No switch is needed for this.

Additionally, on the DuoX2 (not the LITE), there are two BIOS banks. There is a switch on the chip itself to choose between them. You *could* make this switch external (this is what spartan is referring to) but it's probably not what you want.

I think you should just wire the chip up according to the instructions. No need to have it 'always-on', you may as well have the option to disable it with the eject button.
