If X2_4983 is at the usual places, grab that one.

If you are sure that your DuoX2 is not a clone (Not sure if there was ever any White Clones made), use X2 5035 as it is the newest.  I have never had a problem with it.  On the other hand, if you are not sure if you have a clone then use something else.
Check to see what size the Bios is before you resize it.  5035 already comes in the 512k that you need and I am pretty sure 498x does a well.  You will want the dummy file on the BIOS CDRW/DVD that you make.  I recommend creating a 50+MB dummy (I use a 100MB dummy myself) and rename your bios file to bios.bin
Follow the instructions in a tutorial for burning settings exactly.  But your steps you have left look good.

Just a couple steps I would skip or modify...

I would flash the bios over http than by disc. Reason being, finding the type of media that your drive will read can be frustrating and a pain in the butt.
No reason to backup the original drive... just a waste of PC space. If it was a softmod then ok. If you just want the game saves then use the PC app called Xbox Save Manager. Once you have FTP ability the program will link into the Xbox and grab your saves... then when you put the new drive in just do the reverse. I would also unlock the original drive. (for possible use in other applications... ie: PC, replace broken Xbox HD)
What I would backup is the eeprom and make a hardcopy of my HD key.

Actually, I have tons of Ritek DVD-R media that is compatible. So that should work. The HTTP flash might as well, but I don't know.

I do not know if it's a clone. I thought all white ones were clones... either way, I downloaded the 4983 BIOS and resized it to 512k, then made a 100 MB dummy file. The first disc I burned I did incorrectly, but I know exactly what I did wrong so once I have the chance I can do it again. I'm thinking a BIOS disc will make it easier for me to flip the switch over and flash the other bank with the older Cromwell BIOS (it has two banks, and I'd like to keep the Flashbios 3.0.3 around).

Though I guess it would be easy enough for me to move the Xbox right next to my computer so I can quickly switch the bank over.

As for the backup, I just meant I wanted to back up my saved games. What's this eeprom thing? If I just keep my old hard drive around will I be able to get that stuff at a later date? Because I don't really have much use for an 8 GB hard drive at the moment.
