Possible To Flash Protect Duox2 ?
« on: January 23, 2006, 03:27:00 AM »

I'd never looked at flash-protecting a Duox2 but i'd be interested to know now as i've had 2 people bring boxes back to me this week which have 'stopped working' - turned out in both cases meddling kids have flashed incompatible BIOS files by hammering all the EvoX menu options! I've just resorted to removing the Flash BIOS line from evox.ini at the moment..

In my experience you can only really see the red flashing light when you've got the cover off, or if you squint really carefully through the left-side grille. I don't think it would be noticeable if you were sat across the room from the xbox. Not sure how difficult it would be to stop it blinking..

Don't know about flash protecting, but gjm is right about the red flashing light..... you will never see it with the case on.  I did 2 friends over Xmas's boxes for them and just this past week we were talking about something and I mentioned the blinking red light and they called bull$hit on me thinking I was making it up cause they have played the xboxes every day since like Dec. 20 and never knew there was a flashing red light.  I had to show them how to look in just right to be able to see it so they would believe me there even was a light.

To protect the flash, one should deattach the write enable pin on the flash IC.

Thanks for the input guys.  Im still fairly new to this.  Can anyone point me in the right direction to find the write enable pin?  Is this one of the connections to the LPC?

Unfortunatelly the case is not that easy. This pin is on the flash IC, which is on the chip. (so it has nothing to do with the LPC) As I traced the traces there is no visible connection to that pin, or it is under the flash chip itself. More research is needed as I said.

UnleashX ( my favourite ) wont flash a bios and nor will most other dashboards. If you install evox just remove or disbale the flash line !

Then if the customer really wants to flash the bios they will have to boot a disc to do it or ftp a program and bios over so it is not done by accident !

The red blinking light is not distracting at all but simply pull the pin 6 ( 5volts ) out of the male headerpin when your doing the install and you wont see that led ever !

There are many modders ... But there is only one ...
