Duo X2 Fine But Blank Screen
« on: November 02, 2005, 07:21:00 PM »

I just installed a Duo X2 Cromwell edition on my roommate's xbox, and the install was flawless.  Cromwell popped up, flashed it, 100%.  Flashbios popped up, flashed it, 100%.  However, after I flashed Cromwell (which went smoothly), I powered up and noticed a blank screen, so I flashed the Flashbios, and the same thing.  Blank screens on both banks, AND when I try to boot MS Dash...blank screen...no sound.  The box is a 1.3/1.4 version.  Any thoughts?  I used standard video cables and a standard controller.

What bios did you flash to the chip? Sounds to me like you have flashed flashbios onto this. If you have then either the flash stuffed up or the Standard video cable you have is not a standard composite one as you think.

I used the X2 4981.06 bios for Bank 1, and I used the bios (along with the eurasia file) that I got from Hackdabox's website for bank 0.  I used the cable that came with the xbox.  It's gotta be all right b/c I installed a Duox2 for a friend last week using the same DVDs and cables, and it worked perfectly.  I just think it's weird how even if I push eject, the MS Dash doesn't start up.  It still remains a black screen.

Remove the duox2 from the headerpin and see if the normal ms bios and ms dash will boot with the chip removed. If not you have done some damage to the motherboard ( or droppped some solder on it ) during th install process. find and remove the soldr / problem and get it working stock again.

Now fit the chip again and see if it works ! Red light should flash on the chip if you boot with power and should not flash if you boot with eject.

Does your xbox av cable have red, white and yellow plugs on one end only ? if yes then it's the right cable.

Check out my HackDaBox Duo X2 Troubleshooter !

PS i have eurasia on my site but bios files must be found from the usual places !

Right, I meant I used the bios mentioned on your website.  The cables are the red/white/yellow standard A/V.  Don't see how it could be a solder problem since the linux bioses started up, and I was able to flash both banks, but then again I'll just check.  I'm at work right now, so I'll try what you said when I get home.  Thanks.

It isn't soldering then it's a duff flashrom or bad bios for that version of the xbox. Let the blank screen run for a minute and see if the front LED goes yellow then you know the bios load timed out and it's probably a duff flashrom.

That doesn't explain MS bios not loading with the chip disabled meaning you have a problem with chip power or you are on the wrong D0 or something is cross wired.

I let it run for about 5 minutes, LED stayed green.  I took the chip off the pinheader, no A/V.  I disconnected D0 then BT, no A/V, so the chip is completely disconnected now, and I still have nothing.  So obviously something is messed up on the mobo, god knows how or what it could be.  I don't see any solder splottage, but I'll keep looking for some b/c I don't know what else it could be.

I checked for stray solder but couldn't find any.  I let the box run while I was at my flag football game for about an hour and a half, and nothing happened while I was gone.  I plugged my xbox up to the cables, and it worked, so it's not a cable problem.  Does anyone have any other suggestions?  Or does it look like time to buy another motherboard?  Or better yet, is there maybe something that needs replacing, like the power regulator issue on the 1.6 boxes?  I appreciate the help thus far.

It may seem like I'm overloading with posts, but I thought it might be important to mention that when I say black screen, the screen on the TV does in fact light up when I power on, but it remains black the entire time.

Hippo / Chancer ,

CODE

AFter I boot up bank 1, all i see is:
Video Encoder Detected:Xcalibur
Flash type manf=0xAD, dev0xD5
Boot:start usb init
intiatizing IDE controller

The above is from a PM i got from elpimpo12 notice the manufacturer ID and Device code ...

Flash type manf=0xAD, dev0xD5

My evox ini file says this is

Flash = 0xadd5,"Hynix - HY29F080",0x100000

 elpimpo12 ,

Hynix ? is this chip a clone ? did the chip have gold or silver BT and D0 pads ?

Also the fact that it doesn't work without the chip means there is a problem with the motherboard now !

1.6 No Power test

Not sure about the pad colors off the top of my head since I'm not at home, but I ordered the chip from Extreme Mods, where I got my other Duo X2 that works perfectly.  I'm almost certain that the chip is legit.  The motherboard is a 1.3/1.4 so I wish it was an easy power regulator fix, but seeing as how the xbox powers up and doesn't shut down ever, then I'm guessing it's not a power problem.

P.S. I didn't send you that PM  smile.gif

ohmy.gif sorry wrong person !

OK remove chip and all wires ! Grab a good light and a mag glass you have some solder splash or damage on the motherboard somewhere and thats why you have a black screen ... nothing to do with chip now !

Yeah it's gotta be motherboard problems now.  I posted this same problem in the A/V forum, so we'll see if anyone can take a stab at it.  I checked for solder last night and didn't find any, but maybe I missed it.  Also, I don't know too much about this, but I see people talking about some problems somewhat like mine resulting from a bad EEPROM.  Is this possible?

Well best way to test / fix eeprom problems is to flash a chip with the unofficial flashbios 3.01 from shepd. Flash it using evox as it will auto resize the bios to 512k for you. If you have access to your mates xbox you chipped earlier then boot his duox2 and then hotswap with yours and flash one bank with the unofficial flashbios 3.01 and X2 4981.06 on the other bank !

HackDaBox Hotswap to flash tutorial

Then you simply boot your chip on the unofficial flashbios 3.01 bank and it will boot even with a bad eeprom ! ( note only this special bios can boot with a dead eeprom )
