Cannot Flash Duox2 White Cromwell
« on: June 16, 2005, 11:06:00 AM »

I have a thread on the newbie forum that has not solved my problem.  So I am hoping there maybe someone on this alt/cheapmod forum that knows.......

Please don't flame for posting on 2 forums.

I cannot flash my duox2 cromwell white chip.  Neither bank will allow the flash. On the Flashbios bank I keep getting the "unknown flash! halting" message.  I have tried http flash, and disc flashing (with a 512kb bios.bin file and a dummy.bin file).  I have also tried the eurasia flash discs on the cromwell bank.  The chip is working.  It's led light is flashing red like it is supposed to.  Both banks boot up immediately.  According to others on the scene this chip has no flash protection.  I don't know what to do.

Please help if you can.

Thanks.

you might want to check your bios.  Try flashing Evox M8 or the new xecuters.  I believe they come in 512K

I've been trying multiple different xecuter bios's.  Which one should I be using for this chip?  Some posts that I have found say that it needs the 4981.06 or the 4983.  Thanks for helping me.

you should be able to use any 512K bios.  Just make sure it is 512K.

Could be a clone, hot swapping might work.

Does the Eurasia flash disc load up ok? In other words does it get to the point where you are asked to put in the bios disc?

I bought it from appleguru from this forum.  He says it's real.  I have seen that others have bought real chips from him.  I must assume it is real.

Chancer,
No it doesn't get to that point with the eurasia disc.  The first disc never loads right.

If the first disc never loads then this is likely a media issue. The bios is not even being looked for when booting the Eurasia Flash Disc so the Eurasia disc should load whatever as no attempt is being made to do anything with the chip at this point.
Appleguru sells originals so it will not be a clone

If FTP Flash doen't work then there is something wrong with the Modchip ( or possibly the FLashbios on the Chip).  However on the Cromwell Bios if it doesn't get passed the 1st disk then t could be the media like Chancer said

All fixed!

I tried a second chip.  This one works perfect.

I don't know if the original chip was bad or if my soldering was bad.  Appleguru told me that it's possible for the chip to boot up with bad soldering on the LPC and still not be able to flash.

Thanks to all of you who helped me out.
